Burning couches?? Is that all they've got? The same stunt ad infinitum .... maybe it's a lack of established rituals, someone above mentioned rites of passage - well, fair enough, start their own but surely they can come up with something a bit more imaginative? More actual fun.

  • Hard News: Undie Wankers,

Riding with no helmet and stoned can be compared to the idiots jumping over the burning couches. Nothing has changed there.

And dare I say this: That "todays" student is a rather more homogenous beast than 30 years ago. In those days we WANTED to go to university. Today one may argue they HAVE to go. It makes for a different mix. They are in debt to the eyeballs so lets show society why we should have a good party on their dollar eh? 30 years ago 6 weeks of work paid for the years bed and breakfast. Not any more.

Quite so. It's a strange thing how we live in more liberated times but seem to be handling it so badly. A lot of naughty activity went under the radar in the "not-instant" society and, also, some nasty pieces-of-work got dealt to quietly as well. Standards might have been higher and more authoritarian, even, but there seems to have been a lot more leeway - room to let loose occasionally and make a few mistakes. The stakes seem a lot higher now.

  • Hard News: Undie Wankers,

A long time ago, in my mis-spent youth, I went to a few minor music festivals, a couple of them uni celebrations and they were so peaceful by comparison. Quite sure there was plenty of drugs & alcohol about, but a totally different atmosphere.

Where has all the aggro come from? And if you want to get totally trolleyed and burn a few things, why not go camp at a deserted beach and build a bonfire?

That I believe is technically known as a "clusterfuck".

    How dreadfully uncomfortable.

Thanks for the follow-up links James, Cecelia & Sacha. It's been a fascinating case and a great example of how this community makes it easy to get meaningfully informed.

  • On Morals,

I'm quite stunned by the 47% of blokes favouring the death penalty - and equally bemused by the Aussies' 23% (total) in favour. Massive drop in the Aussie figure from 1995 to 2005, from 53% to 25% - I wonder why?

Oh for FUCK'S SAKE. Key has just appointed Nigel Latta to the group reviewing the child discipline law.

Put on yer Julie Andrews frock and sing along with John:
    I have confidence in Latta
    I have confidence in Hide
I have confidence that they can turn the tide
Besides, you can see I have confidence in meeee....!

  • Cracker: History Repeating,

webweaver, you must have met Misty? I never got up to AhuAhu, but I met Misty in Wanganui when we both belonged to a wimmin's group about 1991ish. Fabulous woman, she used to tell us tales of the commune and all the hard work to keep it going. I did almost buy some land up the Whanganui River years ago, sounds v. similar as in the row across the river or flying fox access, but you didn't have to tramp further. An old hippie place, with avocadoes and tamarillo orchard. It was much harder to borrow money to buy land, then.

  • Cracker: History Repeating,

What a contrast to Muldoon and 1981.

It was. After Kiwi Keith he was very refreshing and quite gutsy i reckon.

I think it might be expecting too much to have got abortion/homosexual law reform in 1974. The Pill hadn't been available for long, that was rather disruptive to kiwi society as I recall. i do think his notion of giving people "a chance to develop alternative social models to everyday New Zealand society" in the form of communes on Crown land quite remarkable.
