  • Hard News: When "common sense" isn't,

I agree, a lot of anger out there. And often related to cyclists "cheating". Running red lights, undertaking on the left, weaving through lanes. Second biggest complaint, bunching up on rural roads. Just people I talk to, all bent of shape about cyclists and the perception that anyone on a bike is going to disturb the harmony of their drive.

I cycle for exercise, a few Round Taupo's to my name. I cannot bring myeslf to commute, 30km each way (fine, good training). Would require Pakuranga Highway and probably Remuera road or Great South Road at rush hour. Risk is simply too high. Have a shower at work, have enough time in my day, breaks my heart, but there is simply not enough room on these roads for me and cars at that time of the day. So I drive. grrrrrrr

I agree drivers may change as more cyclists flood the streets, but in the meantime cyclists can do two things.

One. Obey the road rules. It doesnt take much longer and it takes away on the the key aggravating factors for drivers.

Two. Make room for cars to pass when cycling in a group. Wave thanks when you cant avoid holding people up. I always do and it is often acknowledged by the driver.

Oh and ignore the wankers, giving people the finger who have just obviously tried to scare you just validates their actions in their own werid mixed up worlds. No reaction is not satsifying to them.

  • Up Front: Or It's Who We're Drinking With...,

I know some Chilean guys who I see at various places around the world for work. Greetings are always a big back slapping hug, which I generally manage to stuff up with a handshake in the middle. Whilst it is just a business relationship, it is a really warm and I enjoy those greetings. Same applies to some Californian guys I know who are very organic. However I would not consider hugging the men I know in NZ, whether business or personal, good old Anglo Saxon reserve and social conditioning I guess.

I am making a real effort to keep hugging my son at nearly 18yo. However he does seem to want to turn it into a bear hug contest, which he mostly wins. I also often greet our women friends with a hug. Seems more acceptable now. I think it it would be really healthy for our society if we could all just hug a bit more...

  • Hard News: Party on, dudes,

Congratulations from another longtime lurker, lured here by the demise of Hard News on bfm, and enjoying the exeprience ever since. Nothing but admiration for the quality of discourse and naturally for RB's commitment and effort to make it all work so well. Charge your glasses, Cheers! and hears to some happy teenage years for PAS.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Better Bit…,

And on other devices here one that’s well intentioned but likely to sink without trace.

I am missing something here. Mr Young has a long avowed dislike of CD's Ipod, MP3 etc. Blue Ray was his thing, now this. But he is also on record (not intended)as saying he doesn't listen to music much.....just too much in the '60's?

  • Field Theory: Yellow wristband, White flag,

I don't like or dislike Lance, I've never met him. But I do respect his strength and achievments. Did he dope? I'm not sure . But on the balance of probabilities yes, because probably they all were. At the very least, transfusing their own blood back in. Probably adding a chemical or two at the same time.

The sad thing is that it seems one cannot win the TdF without cheating. Awful choice, cheat or never attain excellence in your field.

When comparing the climbing speeds now with the 90's it seems perhaps doping is less (they are going slower) so perhaps Bradley is clean (er?)

Like Jack, I don't expect the UCI will be bullied by USADA, possibly Lance is counting on that. All in all it is a further indictment on professional cycling. I'm still going to enjoy my rides in the weekend though!

  • Hard News: Moving from frustration to disgust, in reply to Martin Lindberg,

I almost feel a kind of parental survivor's guilt about this as my youngest is now in her final year of school.

    Snap

But I now have one child half way through a primary teacher training degree. By the looks of this she is going to be fed into a machine. Just finished 5 week practicum at a decile 1 school and loved it. A world of opportunity to offer little year ones. Measured by NS league tables? Sorry it is just BS, cant work, wont work.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: More Finding,

Reckon you need to bundle these tunes that you discover up into an old fashioned CD and sell them at the local farmers market and online, here in this forum.

Put me down for one. All this streaming stuff is fine for you young city folks......
