I'm just wondering if anyone would care about the destruction of books, if they were all the Readers' Digest Condensed Book books. These always look much more impressive than they actually are.

Except the Mrs Pollifax series, which needed a healthy dose of 'abridging' anyway.

Back in the late '80s, I had my first summer job, indeed my first library job at Nelson Public Library adding the books to the computer database. Each morning every member of staff had to spend some time tidying their particular assigned section. And each day, we would play "Hunt the 'Joy of Sex'". Almost every single day, someone would remove it from the shelf, and hide it within another book so they could read it without anyone noticing. It was frequently located nestling inside an Asterix, or within the pages of an encyclopaedia...

Anyway, later on as a Library Assistant, my favourite part of the job was keeping track of what people were reading and introducing them to new authors.

Emma- Umm, I'm just intrigued - I know who two of the three were, but was number 3 who I think it was?

Best/most romantic thing that ever happened to me on Valentine's Day was being given a slingshot.

    Oh, and, Colin Firth.

You got a slingshot AND Colin Firth or V Day? Sounds like a good day to me.

I spent Valentine's Day 2004 seeing David Bowie. It was very romantic in a letting long suppressed teenage fantasies run free kind of way.

Hey, was that the day it rained as if all the clouds in sky opened at once, it was freezing cold (for February) and he DIDN'T play Space Oddity [mutter, mutter, grumble]?

If so, we were there too - wonderful concert!

librarians, particularly in big branches, never, ever look at the books they're issuing to you. They don't care in the slightest what you're reading, and moreover are (mostly) trained not to comment without you saying something first

Ummm - this is not necessarily true... Ok, probably we never said anything offensive to the person in question, but there were certainly giggles afterwards...

On the subject of Valentine's Day, my husband and I have never really been in to it, except for our first year together - I gave him an inflatable tulip, and he gave me a coffe table. Our disinterest is partly due to the rampant commercialisation and bollocks of the occasion, and partly due to the fact that my husband had his birthday last week, followed the next day by our wedding anniversary.

Oh, and could I have Colin Firth, Hugh Grant AND Angelina Jolie?

  • Up Front: The Missus,

Surely being a wife's not a job when it's such fun?

it could indicate a use for my lightsabre and thigh-boots.

    Can you send me photos?

  • Up Front: Christmas Stockings,

Y'know, I wasn't actually planning to spend my afternoon reading "Not always right" - I had things to do... Thanks for that.
