"In a remarkable exchange on Morning Report today, Steven Joyce seemed fairly determined not to let that happen."
I rarely agree with Joyce, especially when Espiner is one-sidedly chairing a debate, but he seemed to be arguing for Capital Gains to include the family home. Exemptions make it easier for the well-resourced to manipulate things, tax-avoidance that in other ways Labour is aiming to reduce.

I probably live a protected life, as until this week I knew nothing about Charlotte Dawson. What I do know is from Public Address, and from people on Daily Blog. I'm lucky to be male, and not famous.
I'd also like to agree most strongly with "Suggested update on Golden Rule: Treat others the way you would like to be treated – if you were having the kind of day they’re having."
A bit of empathy will really help, and we may need to work hard to do that. I'd also recommend trying to emulate Russell's ability to convincingly acknowledge when he fucks up, there are a lot of 'apologies' around that fail to convince the way he can.

wonderful - I don't need Christmas now, it makes my three stars! (Seeing Iris Dement and Donna Dean for the first time are the others) Do I get a change of government next year as well?

… and having now read to the end of the response, (though not double-checking) does it not seem odd that so few women respond to this issue?

Hard News: We need to talk about Len, in reply to
Maybe we should move away from elected mayors and have them indirectly elected by council. That way, if councillors are unhappy with the mayor, they can choose another one. We don't have a directly elected PM, so why directly elect mayors?
this is such a good idea on so many fronts that M Thatcher did away with it in the big British cities. How do we promote it?

I guess one of the things about him is the way he brings out the best in people (de Klerk, Bolger, Matthew for example). Some folks just do that.

Penny Webster, who works productively with the "Labour" mayor, is a former Act MP. (I did actually have to look that up and check it ...)
off the point, but astonishing to non-experts like me, is that I just read an article (in the Guardian) by someone who had been employed to fact-check a review of a novel.

all the best, Russell, you are a treasure. Meanwhile, could everyone also consider joining/supporting a political party, and/or discussing politics positively and widely, so that next year's General Election can be a wholehearted collective expression of where we want this country to go.

Speaker: You ain't from round here, in reply to
It's very hard to find much about the philosophical/political/party inclinations of most candidates (so-called independents, or with bland party names often involving 'team') and it could well be that the Green candidate was asked by his party to stand in an area where he stands a chance, as the Mayor (formerly Green) lives here and previously represented this ward. Our other identifiable candidate is a sitting Labour councillor.

An interesting point about 'for the next-election-but-one'. I believe one of the last changes to the US Constitution was to make any changes to pay of politicians apply only after the next election.
