  • Up Front: Adric and the Art of Asking,

    Best wishes Emma,
My wife's just come through a breast cancer experience - we know the anxiety and the imagination at times like this. You can control that, I'm sure - and it will make you stronger.

I was told that half of all ferro-cement boats ended up as swimming pools.

  • Hard News: Dirty Politics, in reply to Russell Brown,

Say the web front end went down, but the server and its OS stayed up. There are lots of ways that someone could gain access, depending on security at the server - and in many sites security is in need of updates and riddled with holes. You'd still need a database login, though - unless the data was in plain text.

  • Hard News: Not doing justice, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

I agree, he used the "Sorry people were offended" line several times. I kept waiting for him to apologise for the statement itself, but I honestly think he didn't understand the difference.

  • Hard News: Not doing justice,

Well pointed out B Jones: Shakespeare's Shylock is unlikable, but that trait is then used to make a serious point about how we all share a common humanity regardless of race and religion. Even in a lightweight play it's complicated.

I do believe it's possible for someone to know the name but not its connotations - not everyone took English to Year 13 or beyond. Two friends I asked didn't know that Shylock was a Shakespearean character or Jewish, they just thought it was slang for "money lender". Another thought it referred to land agents.

  • Hard News: The Fine Line, in reply to bob daktari,

I heard somewhere recently that immigrants tend to settle and remain in an area after 4 years; they've settled in to work, made friends, kids are in school, other relatives have settled near by. So why not allow immigrants to settle in the regions and bond them to stay there for 5 years? Very few would then migrate to Auckland from the regional towns - but we'll need to have jobs waiting for them of course.

  • Speaker: Facing the floods, in reply to Sacha,

The flooding isn't in Gerry's electorate. Most people on his side of town haven't visited the east side for a year or two, so they think it's all fine and dandy - they just want some nice fashion and interior decorating shops to appear in the CBD.

Russell, you're spot on. Key's photo ops and Brownlee's bullying are not helping, and Lianne has been left to handle the mess while these goons play their power games.

  • Up Front: Just Like Unicorns,

I was reminded of Bill Clinton's "I did not have sex with that woman" bullshit. If it involves your sexual organs and makes you feel sexy, it's sex all right.
