    Sadly.

  • Hard News: The Next Labour Leader,

then Parker was gone and his support flowed over to Parker – because, it seemed, Parker was not David Cunliffe.

Something not quite right about that sentence; keeping a handle on which David is which = difficult.

  • Hard News: The Solemnity of the Day, in reply to Kyle Matthews,

Canada has fixed election date laws in place at the Federal level, and in many Provinces.

They are routinely ignored: for example, when a PM (Federal) or Premier (Provincial) is replaced by someone new who wants to "refresh their mandate", or an incumbent is simply frustrated by their Opposition and fancies their chances of winning greater representation via another election.

The constitutional power of the PM or Premier to instruct the Governor-General (Federal) or Lieutenant-General (Provincial) to dissolve the House and call an election is unchanged.

Pure political theatre, particularly on the part of various right-wing parties.

  • Hard News: A week being a long time in politics, in reply to Ianmac,

Sadly, up to 56% of the voting public couldn't care less.

56% good grief. Everyone who's ever reached such lofty heights as deputy assistant treasurer of the Taumaranui branch of the National Party will become an MP.

This is called the "Gilbert Myles" syndrome for those who remember 1990-

  • Hard News: Criminalising Journalism,

Perhaps the Polis could go after Winston Peters instead ... that would make for great viewing, and I'm comfortable with the implications. ;-)

  • Hard News: Criminalising Journalism,

Anyone else thinking this whole 'fiasco' is tailor made for Winston Peters,?

He can string everyone (esp. the media) along, drip-feeding innuendo and half-sentence "quotes", for days on end. A pig in the proverbial.

As for the NZ media writ large: nice to see they've found their claws once again. Probably a bit rusty after not having been used since eviscerating Labour, and Peters, in 2007-08. Interestingly, though, in the current situation the claws are being used in large part to protect themselves.

  • Hard News: The perils of political confidence,

It's now being strongly suggested that Key said something to the effect of NZF voters "dying out". Which, to be fair, has often been said ... but probably not in "polite company." A nice soapbox for Winston Peters' finely tuned sense of faux outrage has now been provided...

  • Hard News: The perils of political confidence,

I for one am sick of all those unemployed lip readers sitting around collecting the dole while trying to work out what people on TV are saying, before heading out to cause criminal mayhem in the leafy suburbs. ACT policy is to put them to work!
