Thanks for the click through to the NZ Herald interview with Ashley Page. (Missed it on the day as the paper is no longer compelling reading.) He talks up the biography of his dad, written by Paul Little, but no mention of title, publisher etc. A quick google search turns up nothing (and is swamped by the Google man of the same name, naturally) so any pointers welcomed!

Hard News: Friday Music: So Rad, in reply to
On this off topic thread, best books about music written by a musician that I’ve read have been by Man’s Deke Leonard. http://www.northdownpublishing.co.uk/id47.html

Sorry to break it to you but Heartland is being closed down. Last day on air is the end of this very month. Licencing spat between TVNZ & Sky as far as I can gather.

I find it fascinating that the Australian handwringing over the recent executions of two of its citizens in Indonesia doesn't seem to allow them to also address the failed war on drugs. I would have thought that it would be impossible to separate these things.

One of the things that ties Maori TV to the other broadcasters is its often incessant and intrusive advertising. It was wonderful to realise at the end of the Sam Neill doco that there had been no commercial breaks whatsoever. The programme encompassing both Oz & NZ made it so much more than its constituent parts. Big thanks to the ABC (who majority funded it) and the producers for facilitating such a worthwhile programme. Hopefully it will be widely available and rebroadcast often.

Hard News: The other kind of phone tapping, in reply to
There were loads of callboxes like that. When I lived in a flat in Tooting Bec in the mid 80s there was a payphone in the hallway for residents that allowed international calls to be made without putting in any money. Worked well until the landlord, who effectively sublet the 'phone from BT, received his three monthly bill (always quarterly in the UK) and freaked (at the phreaking) at the size of his bill, which bore no relation to the coins in the unit. We moved out soon after.
Not many people seem to have noticed but if you look at an old NZ rotary unit the numbers are backwards compared to (almost) everywhere else. Not quite water down the plughole, but... -
Mary Briefcase is rather cool, not sure that I'll actually be playing the cassettes though.

Sheesh, that's all predictably depressing. And I thought the only fishing issue was Maori rights being leased out to Johnny Foreigner.
