  • Southerly: Things to be Grateful For: A…, in reply to giovanni tiso,

Meanwhile, MetService spokesman Bob McDavitt said he heard a report of a snow flake being seen in Lambton Quay. I’m off to build the world’s smallest snowman.

I can confirm that more than one flake of snow was seen in Kelburn - it snowed at my place for oooohhh, 5 minutes at least! Very exciting! Except I was so busy tweeting about it it didn't occur to me to take a photo. Darn it!

Today is a beautiful blue-sky day here in Welli - and it's FREEZING - although I suspect not quite as freezing as the South Island. * sigh * I miss proper snow.

I'm a few minutes behind (cigarette breaks and the joy of MySky) so I have that to look forward to. In the meantime I am being bored stupid by James,. Which I guess is his strategy.

Ooh here's a screengrab of the shaving foam custard pie incident http://twitpic.com/5sk38w

Absolutely! Especially as he said earlier he was in daily contact with both James and Rebekah Brooks - that's a lot of contact for a 1% part of his vast empire....

I'm liking Tom Watson's questioning of Rupert. Good idea to keep on at the father and keep the son quiet. Much too much time-wasting blahblahblah by James...

Lordy this home affairs committee hearing is fascinating.

If Fedorcio says Yates did due diligence on Wallis and Yates says that was Fedorcio’s responsibility, can we assume no-one did it?

…Except to ask him if anything embarrassing might come out of them employing him. Amazing.

Oh - and 10 of 45 members of the Met's Dept of Public Affairs are former News International employees. Bloody hell.

  • Southerly: Tower Insurance Have Some Bad…, in reply to BenWilson,

Also, it’s one possibility to “Who else can we insure with”? My insurance is with the bank that holds my mortgage. If they ripped me off, they’re also ripping themselves off. I know they’re separate entities, technically, but they’re part of the same portfolio for any shareholders in my bank.

I was checking my full replacement policy with ASB again yesterday and noticed for the first time that although I got it through ASB for my mortgage (also with ASB) it actually says it's underwritten by IAG.

When I called to make a claim yesterday, the recorded selections message was along the lines of "if your policy is underwritten by IAG, press 1, if your policy is underwritten by Tower press 2" etc - and when I made my selection my call was transferred to IAG, rather than going through to ASB. Assuming that this is common to all the banks, then they're not actually the ones doing the insuring, are they? I think they're just the middle-man.

  • Southerly: Tower Insurance Have Some Bad…, in reply to Rob Stowell,

I wonder if the fact that J Brownlee says they're not going to forcibly evict homeowners from the Red Zone, (they'll just cut all services) might encourage some hardy souls to stay put and see if they can make a go of living off-grid.

In his interview on RadioNZ David mentioned that they already have a well at their place (and so do lots of their neighbours) - and since the earthquake a composting shortdrop toilet and grey water - so all they'd need would be electricity which could be generated with solar panels and/or a wind generator.

I think it will be interesting to see if anyone decides to have a go at it - especially as there have been newspaper reports of pockets of (relatively) undamaged houses that will be demolished purely because they're in the Red Zone. In those pockets especially I don't think it would be impossible for the homeowners to get together to share the costs of installing the things they need in order to live off-grid.

I know it would cost money to do, but if it's a choice between losing your home (and a large chunk of $$) altogether and trying the off-grid solution, maybe some people will think it's worth giving it a go.

This was a government decision which is not an insurable event.

Yeah, but it was a government decision made as a direct result of an event that caused “accidental and sudden loss of or damage to your home” – which jolly well is covered by insurance policies.

It’s not like the govt’s planning to build a motorway through the red zone, which I agree would be different (though equally distressing).

Weasel weasel weasel. Insurance companies should (I use that word advisedly) exist primarily to pay OUT in case of a disaster or accident – balancing the money we’ve all been paying IN all these years. They shouldn’t (word also used advisedly) be there primarily to please their shareholders.

And as for other customers they’re supposedly looking out for – I’m one of those customers and I live in Wellington. In addition to praying that we don’t get The Big One, I would be a hell of a lot happier if I knew that if it does come and I survive, that I will be able to rely on my insurance company to pay out on my claim in full. It seems that after today’s news this is indeed a faint hope.
