Hard News: A handful of battling billionaires, in reply to
Just curious as to how Juan Cole can be characterised as a warmonger. I have occasionally dipped into his blog for a casual browse and he appears to take a very dim view of the USA's overseas military adventures.
I am, of course, open to evidence to the contrary.

I wonder also how many people would deliberately refuse to vote (rather than failing to vote through apathy) because they could not conceive of considering an alternative no matter how upset they were with their usual choice of party.

Agreed but B Jones beat me to it.
However, even cold water has a cost attached. It takes money and energy to make it fit for human consumption. And wasting it just because I can feels a bit, well .... selfish.

I seem to recall, at about the same time, the same sort of scientifically illiterate frothing at the mouth over the suggestion that we might consider using water-efficient shower heads in new buildings.
A few of the somewhat heated 'discussions' I had in the smoko room at work made it quite clear to me that the gender of the prime minister of the day was a significant factor in the objections to the policy.

If commercially owned and run mainstream media become the only influencer of public opinion, what happens to democracy?
Pretty much what has already happened to genuine democracy in the USA under the influence of the privately owned and frighteningly partisan media over there.

Hard News: The Real Threat, in reply to
Interesting notion. It recalls an old Star Trek episode where two opposing nations fight a 'virtual' war, firing 'virtual' missiles at one another using giant computer simulations.
Our bold Cap. Kirk puts a stop to this by hitting the Big Red Button; detonating all the missiles at once and 'killing' everyone on the planet. Thus demonstrating the essential futility and foolishness of the entire exercise.
When, as a result of our internet activity, we are all implicated as potential subversives, who then will the 'War on Terror' be directed against?

Is NZ democracy really run on the smell of an oily rag?
Regrettably I fear it is currently being run by an oily prime minister...

Hard News: Kitchen Hacks, in reply to
Thanks. Looks like I'm going moroccan and/or prawns this weekend.
Besides, the kitchen will be the warmest room in the house for the next couple of days I think.

I've done that with some of the lemons from my own tree and I like the pleasantly rustic look they give to my kitchen shelf but I have to ask - how does one actually use a preserved lemon?
Wouldn't they be a bit too salty for a conventional desert?
