  • Hard News: Staying Alive,

Can I just point out, in the context of running red lights on a bike, that traffic lights actually don't pay attention to cyclists. Try it sometime - if there's no other traffic (and it's not that particular kind of light system that just switches automatically on cue) then the cyclist could sit there forever without ever getting a green light.

Which is one reason why I run lights all day, every day on my bike. The main one though is, it's a lot safer - as previously discussed. Ditto taking up the whole lane on every two-laner, such as P-Road here in Auckland. There isn't room for a bike and a car in most lanes, so being all passive and sitting on the left is just inviting trouble.

  • Legal Beagle: Referendum Fact Check 4:…, in reply to BenWilson,

Ditto what Ben says... struggled to understand the STV bit as alluding to our cousins over the ditch (which makes me wonder how many Aussies get it too) but very good analysis.

Alas, I doubt very, very much that most folks will think anywhere near as hard about the referendum - let alone their actual vote... which is where democracy is sadly far too representative all round IMHO. Who was it said the best argument against democracy was five minutes with the average voter, Churchill?

  • Hard News: The Sound of Music, in reply to Grant McDougall,

Oddly... many, many musicians of my acquaintance know a damned sight more than I about rugby. And football. Actually football even more than the oval ball code. But perhaps that's just musos being more well-rounded types or something...

  • Hard News: The Sound of Music, in reply to Megan Wegan,

The relevance of the mariachi thing is, everyone can't help but go "Wahey!!!" very loudly.

You sort of have to be there... though TBH me and anyone I've been watching any games with do it at home too...

Fiji-Samoa, fuck yeah! Have had my (bloody pricey) tickets for some time now... shouting a mate for his birthday. Going to be a heckuva game methinks, probably crucial for both teams' chances of progressing further in the RWC...

That article you linked to on the French strip says:

in all likelihood will have to wear their change shirt due to a clash with the All Blacks' black shirts

  • Field Theory: It's not yours, but you…, in reply to Damian Christie,

imagine the uproar if a little NZ company was excluded from its rightful trade mark in this country because some evil multinational had been using it overseas first.

This happens all the time in band world... because most bands worth their stripes want to sell their music offshore.

The first NZ example that springs to mind is Cut Off Your Hands... original name was Shaky Hands, changed to avoid legal action from another band with similar name The Shaky Hands from Portland, Oregon. There must be a few others.

  • Up Front: Respectably-Dressed Sensible…,

Rather late to this one buuut I've been trying to find a dissenting article I read somewhere from an American feminist on Slutwalk - but can't, however today ran across this Slutwalk: Walk of Shame or McFeminism? by an Indian feminist, which says the same kinda thing from her perspective...

SlutWalk is an annoying, antifeminist paradox. It is recreational hacktivism of the kind which topples over the very ideas that it is meant to uphold, by tearing down feminism (from Toronto to Delhi) and pandering to ignorant notions of patriarchy-friendly (!) ‘gender equity’. It packages serious issues that Indian feminism has been dealing with for years into a designer occasion that plays right into all the conventions and clichés that femininity worldwide is expected to conform to, challenging nothing and confirming chauvinist male attitudes by reassuring them that all the ‘sluts’ *giggle* really want is the licence to wear really tiny skirts and won’t they allow that pwetty please?

Aren't these websites based in the USA, or at least not in NZ? Hence it's not actually publishing here... anyone?

How did West Ham go this season

Dear God Russell - say you're not a Manure fan!

There is no good reason to be such a person, unless you have family connections to United fandom. Anyone but them.
