  • Hard News: Democracy Night,

Hmm, I hadn't thought of Banks' win this way before. But I wonder if Rudman is over-estimating Banks' dedication to the CBD rail link, and under-estimating his dedication to his own electoral success.

  • Hard News: Last Words, in reply to Ben McNicoll,

But if I’m thinking about that, how much of Green’s soft support will think the same way?

If you're thinking that, don't you also have to think about how much of the Greens' soft support will also think about how much of Green’s soft support will think the same way, and thus vote Green? Or how much of the Greens' soft support will also think about how much of the Greens' soft support will also think about how much of Green’s soft support will think the same way, and thus vote Labour? (:

  • Capture: Walk across the rooftops., in reply to Russell Brown,

It occurs to me that at some point inviting everyone to delve into their parents’ photo albums and scan and post some here would be fun and rewarding.

Ooh anyone want to see pictures of trains? Because man did my Dad like to take pictures of trains.

the novelty of a Half Frame camera

My late father had a pair of Olympus Pen FT half-frames that he used to swear by, at least partially because he could fit 72 shots on one film. I remember there was only one place in Wellington where he could get decent prints from it, though.

I hope Twitter doesn't go silent - I'll be scrutineering, and I need something to read on my phone during the boring bits.

  • Cracker: Blues Clues,

I suggest buying a bulk lot of little black carry-pouches and leaving them lying round the office with treats inside, the kind of thing you'd find in a school fair lucky-dip: fluffy keyrings, toy cars etc.

  • Hard News: Criminalising Journalism, in reply to Russell Brown,

You know, a part of me is wondering if the police are effectively saying to Key: “You wanted a criminal investigation? This is a criminal investigation.”

Oh god I hope so. I would take back every bad thing I've ever said about the NZ Police.

  • Hard News: The perils of political confidence, in reply to Steve Barnes,

It’s clever because, had Norman not been so over the top in his apology, it would have made the Greens look principled open and honest, without affecting their grass roots support

On the contrary, I think the whole thing makes the Greens look less than principled to the kind of voter we're trying to attract more of - voters who haven't voted Green before.

  • Hard News: The perils of political confidence, in reply to Steve Barnes,

A member of a party is on a track, however small, to one day be in a position of power. It would be in the “interests” of a member to further the power of that party, in what ever way possible, power corrupts…

... and very little power corrupts very little. This doesn't square with my observations of other members at all.
