Interesting to read Simon Grigg's thoughts on Auckland regarding his recent visit. He has obviously already voted with his feet and many of his coments support that move. (Kinda what you expect.)
Certainly if reads like elements of a self fulfilling prophecy if or rationalisation after the fact perhaps.
If you live o/s you might even even want to find reasons to stay away which is a pity because the sun HAS been shining a great deal.
It does all read like a parallel universe to me. It is not the city I know. And BTW when I find great restaurants and cafe's the last thing I would do would be to broadcast that so they don't get overwhelmed.
If you find your friends in trouble - do you join them at the bottom or help them to see a different reality - or even find some other friends to hang out with.
Time for a change?

Its great that the Conchords won.
However you link to the Obama award notes
Hillary Rodham Clinton took home a Grammy in 1996 for her audio version of the book, "It Takes A Village."
so it just make be that in some categories (not comedy) there are more awards than nominees

It seems like the whole point of FOO is to be there in person - consequently a bit frustrating to want reports from those who weren't there.
After listening to the Nat's podcast / (& Ian Wright)
It seems that FOO is a kind of a personal multi tasking accelerator so that relationships between all the attendees are all improved for the other projects. The physical equivalent of very high bandwidth...
Ian Wright on electric cars is also very timely. 5% of world pop and 44% of fuel consumption etc. What was intriuging about Ian's podcast is the back story about how the project is being sold now.
Great to hear him mention the business model and the reasons why their focus on performance is helping to make the project successful.
Sharp business thinking and a great idea = all good.
In his view offering something more than energy efficiency is the way to drive the brand and ultimately open up other choices as the community of interest changes.
His summary of the Californian experience on electric cars - i.e car co's HAD to make electric cars which they did at a loss and then when the law changed they were scrapped.
It would have been good to make comparisons with the Norwegian Think EV car which looks like it may prove to be one of the first large scale successes for electric cars. Think car
Perhaps there is more on Ian's website
wrightspeed and the Cleantech blog looks like it may be worth tracking also.
"First, Ian doesn’t care about gas mileage per se – he cares about performance, power, and most importantly, payback."

Regarding Foo camp
Will be looking forward to the reports.
As I recall one of the criteria for Wikipedia is that events be significant and therfore Someone has to notice the outputs.
From Wellington I hear that one of the debates on peering
See peering for example or the blog peering blog Perhaps someone from foobaar could this year visit those sites/ blogs and make a comment or two?
or the lates submissions at
separation of Telecom etc. (Submission on Amended Telecom Operational Separation Plan 25 January, 2008)Seems like there has been plenty of effort from the usual suspects - but not sure if any of this was progressed by Foo camp and would be good to know that....

Tom - there is already a school - grouping that celebrates Ed's legacy in Manukau city. Hillary College has been around since the 60's but now it is joined by 2 other schools since 2001.
From their website
The new collegiate was launched by its namesake, Sir Edmund Hillary on December 4, 2001 and combines the resources of what was Clydemore Primary, Bairds Intermediate and Hillary College in partnership with Manukau Institute of Technology and The University of Auckland.

It's Foo time!
as a side bar or should that be a baaah - good to see that Foo is still on wicked pedia after all the fuss last year.
Would be useful to hear what significant outcomes actually eventuated -
* like changes to copyright legislation?
* changes to Telco separation programme?
* chance for MP's to mix with geeks?
and what else was there? It seems like a programmers festival from the outside. Would be good to hear a bit more as things evolve.
As someone who works with open source all the time it strikes me that there is still a need to sell that message of the brave new world.
Will be looking forward to the reports.

One other possible reason for NZ sharemarket "looking better" than say Australia at the moment is the events of Oct '87 pretty much scared a whole generation away from the market.
Consequently the type of people trading there now are possibly those for whom fundamentals and longer term cycles are more important and maybe they are less panicked than some others.
Secondly - many of NZ's biggest companies are actually private and not really listed (Fonterra.)
I've also heard compared to Australia the % of NZ investors on the local sharemarket in each country is much lower here than in Aus.
This also reflects on the size of our market which is tiny.

Thank you. Beach swimming in NZ is such a special experience and you shared that joy around.

Hi Russell,
Thanks for the Tuwhare links - much appreciated. In some ways Hone's real influence here was much more real than the Hilary one.
As the Man himself wrote
O tree
in the shadowless mountains
the white plains and
the drab sea floor
your end at last is written.
