Lyndon, when they did the Mills & Boon cross-over, our consensus was that if they wanted to make rugby appeal to women, they should have gone for slash-fic. Same principle.

That press release, OTOH, makes my teeth ache. 'Ladies'? Srsly? 'Fairer fans'? Has anyone seen my bucket?

  • Field Theory: The old mail bag,

"This" is the new Adidas Super 14 promotion called Jersey Swap.

    AWESOME

I just have to go give this to all my friends.

BTW, your mailbox is way more like mine than I was expecting, frankly.

Flim-flam doesn't attract tax exemptions or go on murderous rampages.

Nor do people try to insist on teaching flim-flam to my children in state schools.

*Only* 40%?! Shit, that sent my mid-morning hot cross bun down the wrong pipe. Cough, splutter. Cripes, who are these 1.6 million people?

Well there's one in my family. How many other people can say that too?

  • Hard News: For Good Friday,

I'm also staggered that only 45% of us believe in the theory of evolution

I suspect this is because a number of people don't know what it says. There's nothing like controversy for ensuring something's poorly taught. What this country needs is more people like my old biology teacher (except for the time he pointed me out to our entire class as the person best fitted to survive an ice age).

That 'believing in Hell' thing though, that surprises me.

While 60% of us still want religious instruction in schools, about half that group believes it should take the form of an introduction to all faiths.

I'd kind of like to see this broken down a bit more. Are people saying they want other religions 'taught' like Christian Religious Instruction is now, or are they just saying they'd quite like Social Studies?

I'm more used to random asterisking, but substitution extra entertaining.

It is, though there's still entertainment to be had from obscuration. My old boss used to use #$%& instead of any naughty word from 'damn' upwards. The result was that everything looked like 'fuck'. (To me, anyway.)

Once I worked this out you could be damn sure my characters would be having #$%&tails in the #$%&pit. I am the BEST employee.

Also, about a month ago our home PC had a catastrophic technical failure, which necessitated (among many other things) reinstalling a clean version of Word. This very column required me to sit here teaching its dictionary a whole bunch of swears. ("No, actually, I don't mean 'winker'.")

I just have to assume that anybody I could shock with rude words left quite a while back.

They have an ultra conservative bot mod, tuned to censor danger like 'sex','homosexual', even 'homophobia'. If you keep on with the expletives, they bump you off, when you come back there are small glitches, i.e. not being able to see your cards, random troop placement etc. Damn well works too.

For certain values of 'work', I guess - particularly for something like that where talking isn't the chief function. In general I'm not fond of 'bad words' moderation because it assumes that all of particular language is abusive, and that all abuse uses particular language. Good for unintentional hiliarity, though.
