Do you know what? I read all those silly posts, and was vaguely annoyed at the thread drift, and I watch that and I think, what a twat am I to have even fleetingly minded the insanity that is guinea pig obsession. That, my friends, is brilliance. Please, please, please, more. On mange, on boit, toujours attendant. Absobloodylutely! Life to a tee. Mwah, mwah.

Surely commercial radio stations are a business, and their business is to get as many people listening to them as possible - what that means, correct me if I'm wrong, is that they have a demographic that they are aimed at, and then they play the music that they think, based on research groups etc, their demographic will like. There really is huge amounts of research that goes on into finding out peoples' tastes, so then, wouldn't that mean, in fact, that each radio station DOES in fact reflect the tastes of the demographic they want to attract? It's slightly more complicated than that as well, I think. I know that I and my friends, all over 40, also listen to radio stations based on the announcers/DJs/ call them what you will. And I would argue that people listen to certain radio stations for a combination of the music, and the DJs. I used to listen to Classic Hits because I only get to listen to the radio in the mornings on the way to work (for about 20 minutes), and I really like the combination of Andrew, Jackie and Justin. However, the music started to turn me off, as I went into a 70's nostalgia thing, and so now I listen to Solid Gold. I love the music AND I like Kevin Black and AJ Whetton in the mornings. A very complicated equation when you combine one person's "radio needs" and however many other people listen to the radiogram, and radio stations do their best to retain their demographic using such equations, I have no doubt. I have great admiration for people like Andrew who started at BFM in the days when it was Radio B, and has made a career in radio, so I would guess that he would have as good an idea of what NZers listen to, as anybody.

Made to live in the distant past? Obviously it didn't suit him at all, which may be why he went to Canada. It suits me and I have to say that quite often I wish it was still like that. The innocence, the utter geographical isolation from the rest of the world, the shops shut on Sunday. A better world in some ways, I would venture to suggest.

Oh David, you really do write so very well. How evocative indeed. I hope that all of us had a childhood imbued with as much grandfatherly love. I certainly did. I really miss my grandad.........

Sometimes, over thinking a thing isn't necessary, people. Meanwhile - congratulations, Russell. It's a nice thing to be recognised for what you do, and you do it very well.

oh my god - now, that is a remarkable story of survival, and I believe the area you refer to is the perinium (sp?)

Well, I'm here to categorically state that not only does NZ comedy not suck, it is absolutely delicious at it's best. I had a lovely time tonight at the Comedy Club. It was Te Radar's take on the history of the South Island, and it was hilarious. He really is a very clever man - another one who makes his living doing what he does well. And the thing I liked about it the most? It was very, very NZ specific. Gotta love it.

As a wage or salary earner it really makes no sense financially to remain in NZ vis-a-vis Australia unless you have to care for a sick relative or something (and don't give me no vague, BS notions of "lifestyle" otherwise).
So we should all pack our bags? I sense a lost boy who didn't find what he wanted here, so went elsewhere. Good for you, Marcus, but not all of us feel like you. This is my heart home, and regardless of politics or economics this is where I choose to live my life. I don't live here for the lifestyle, I live here because the land speaks to me, the bush speaks to me, the sea speaks to me. Doesn't happen for everybody, neither should it. We all value different things. Or is that a bit BS?

Felix, that really was an inane thing to say, don't you think? There are hundreds of extraordinary comedians in NZ who work very hard to bring you their observations on life, in their various ways, that make you laugh and ponder and go, well yes, exactly. Not everything from "overseas" is fabulous. Not everything from other countries is better because it's not from here - I thought that attitude died long ago. Obviously, I was wrong.
