I was born in October. They were all conceived in the Southern hemisphere, me in the North. The only thing I can think of is that there really wasn't much to do in NZ in May in those days...
Maybe early June. Queens Birthday Weekend. Long weekend, cold weather....

The only Valentine's Day card I've ever sent was to an English girlfriend who was back visiting the UK and dropped a pretty heavy hint she expected one.
I sent it, with a note saying that we didn't go much for Valentines Day in NZ, or if we did I'd certainly never noticed it, and also that I hoped she'd have a nice day, and you know, the usual love and squelching noises sentiments. She showed it to her friends, who laughed, but whether at the card or at the fact she was going out with this unromantic Kiwi I'm not sure. We broke up a few months later but that was nothing to do with the card, more on 'where is this relationship going?' issues.
Claudia (now my wife) and I moved in together on Valentines Day but there was no particular reason for that other than it was the only suitable day we could get the truck booked.

@Russell: That Francis Wheen book is a great read. Something to annoy and delight everybody.
I think he's a little unfair on Thatcherism (although not totally unfair - the evangelical side didn't appeal to my sceptical Tory instincts).
The index alone is hilarious, eg:
Tycoons.. sexiness of, 40; superstitions of, 56; weaking socks in bed, 60.
The index entry on God is too long to quote in full but examples include 'arrives in America...asked by Khomeni to cut off foriengers hands....believed to have created humans 10,000 years ago...could have made intelligent sponges....doesn't foresee Princess Diana's death...helps vacuum cleaner saleswoman...'
@Jolisa: yeah, James Wood caught my attention when I read a rave review of The Irresponsible Self which is a collection of essays about humour in literature.
It is a very serious book.
The thing which interested me about How Fiction Works was his examination of how writers tell stories from different perspectives and how that can be moved around in quite subtle ways.

Not a new idea.
I can remember running an argument that Muldoon was a punk politician. OK, it was after several vodka lime and lemonades in the Whakatane Commercial Hotel's garden bar, back in '83, and, yeah, I never got round to actually writing the idea up, but still...
Oh, and several people have suggested Maggie Thatcher had a lot of the punk ethos.

Sellers: Is there any sex in it?

Re: tramping etc...
I once confused an American woman visiting friends when I talked about tramping. Rather got the wrong idea...
I remember seeing that film - its done up at Nelson Lakes, from memory. I think we got shown it at Scouts.
The thing about hypothermia is even mild doses can make people make silly decisions. I've seen it utterly bugger someone's sense of direction.

Bloody good -- not the biggest fan of the whole "alt-country" deal, but she does do it well. Makes me regret that she's hardly prolific -- eight or nine albums in thirty years, isn't it?
Is it as many as that?

The only time, from memory, I've ever phoned a radio station and asked 'who was that you were just playing?' was back in 1989 when I heard her on BfM.
