  • Hard News: Five further thoughts, in reply to Alfie,

I’m not surer how much milk NZ produces at the moment, but wouldn’t those sorts of quantities pretty much kill the international demand for NZ-produced milk? Just wondering.

China has also been importing NZ dairy cows specifically to build up its own herds. Apparently native Chinese cows don't produce enough high-quality milk. Or don't produce enough and what they produce is not high-quality enough. Or something.

As for the numbers, I've gotten used to stonkingly huge numbers in news reports of industrial-scale dairy farms in China, both Fonterra's and others. I have no idea how they make such numbers happen, considering the farms are always in densely populated areas* where the water supplies are already incredibly stressed and surface water filthy.

*don't forget, large parts of China are almost empty and/or mountainous

This may be relevant: Pam Corkery on the "puffed up little shits". She gives some examples of truly unprofessional behaviour.

Majority of people who cared enough to vote.

The majority voted for Not National. 48% voted for National. That's not a majority.

I'm not asking you to start sprouting superpowers. But just in case I wasn't clear enough earlier: I first read about Oravida in Chinese a long, long time before Oravida appeared in NZ's mainstream English-language media. And more than once I've read about the visit of some NZ official (mayor, MP, minister, party official) to China in the Chinese media and been unable to find anything in the NZ media.

No problems. I could've been clearer.

Require all government departments to proactively publish all OIA'able material on their websites and have the Ombudsman police them to make sure they really are putting all such material up? And require all government departments to have an effective and easy-to-use directory and search function? Surely all the information that is OIA'able should be out in the public domain anyway, regardless of whether anybody actually wants it?

Read the rest of my comment. And what I was responding to. I don't disagree that the Police should investigate and prosecute where there is evidence of the law being broken. I do agree that the Police should be reluctant to get involved in politics.

Judith Collins and Oravida – wrote (lots) about it

Not aimed at you specifically, but at the media generally (so including you):

Yeah, you wrote about it. Late. And with many questions left unanswered.

Why not (I don’t know), the Police, who always seem so reluctant to get involved in anything that involves politics?

I think there's a bloody good reason for that reluctance, and although I'd agree there's been a few occasions when they've been evidence of criminality and have still been reluctant to investigate, let alone prosecute, I generally think the Police should remain reluctant to involve themselves in such matters.

So far only what I posted on one of these other threads, which was an article cribbed from Global Daily and seemed to be little more than a translation of the original FT piece. So far it doesn't seem especially relevant to NZ except that China might like to do a little deal to help get their stolen money back and perhaps put a couple of people before the courts.
