Is there any irony in having that ad at he top of the page?
There's another lovely one at the Herald where they're after a motto that somes up New Zealand and you have to negotiate around a "My Australia ' ad to read them.

Can anyone pin this down with the evidence? That 60 houses were searched nationwide but of the 16 arrested only 3 were Tuhoe and only 3 others Maori.
The number of maori arrested attributed to a Herald post yesterday that doesn't seem to be online anymore and a clip of Parekura Horomia at the hikoi on One news last night.

The Dom Post report clearly only covers the dramatic 'evidence', and not what they call 'comical', which I believe provides important context to the seriousness of some of the claims. On the evening news, it was breathlessly reported that people wanted to shoot the propellers off George Bush's helicopter. Yeah, those jokes aren't that funny anymore, but they were clearly jokes.
I remember during the Erebus inquiry the difficulty they had in even interpreting the meaning of the cockpit transcript, which was occurring in a very tight context.
The comment 'I don't like this' by one of the engineers on the flight deck was interpreted by the crash investigators to add to the evidence that the pilot was steering the aircraft in the wrong direction. Justice Mahon said we had no idea what he was talking about. Someone may have just passed him the wrong choice of sandwich.

I find it pretty hard to disagree with the Sludge Report on Scoop.
Time to say sorry to the "Rule of Law". We are now all in possession of it. Everybody who has a copy of the newspaper or an internet connection. In theory we are now all breaking the law. This is as absurd as it is disturbing.
Meanwhile these 16 people have no way through the legal process to respond to the accusations against them. If they make public statements to the media they can be used against them in court. If they say nothing the public will probably assume their guilt.
Even the very expensive option of defamation law is not an option as the Dominion is protected by qualified privilege to report the sworn statement of a police officer in a court affidavit.
And while these 16 named people have been held up as terrorists in the court of public opinion , the Solicitor General - highest legal prosecutor in the country - has concluded - after reading a great deal more than the single affidavit upon which the Dominion bases its report - decided that the evidence collected against these 16 at a cost of over $8 million (according to the police) is insufficient for them to face anything more than illegal possession of firearms charges *.

Whew! At least we probably all agree on this one.

Three of the 16 people arrested during the raids last month were from Tuhoe
Really! Only three. Is this something new or have we already covered this? I haven't had time to go through the whole thread.

Anyway thanks Joanna for helping me crack the ton. I think RB's system has been infected with the same problems as The Herald's poll.

Really! Those marketers, they know their onions. And here I was thinking because he put me off everyone else would be the same. There's always another way of looking at things out there.

Not here I hope.

In a much wider context Roger Cohen has a piece in today's New York Times encouraging Americans to watch Al Jazeera to help broaden their worldview.
