  • Speaker: One year on from the umbrella protests,

Yes the signs at the border about limits on carrying baby powder across are hard to miss.

I was talking to a friend in Shenzhen on Friday about the changes to his access to Hong Kong ... He was born in Shenzhen but has no birth certificate (Shenzhen residents are grandfathered in, something he can't prove) ... the changes created by the reactions to the smuggling have limited the access to HK he has been used to (and needs for his work). Meanwhile I can get across the border faster with eChannel on my NZ passport.

On the other hand it seems easier to get a seat on the Luohu train .....

I was aghast to discover a little while back that the RWC hadn't even started yet ... And there are 8 more weeks of sports in the wrong place in the news to go ....

The airnz safety film yesterday was particularly cringeworthy ... at this point I've stopped watching them on principal which I suspect is not the goal. And having the screen in front of my seat saying "kia ora Paul" when I sat down was borderline creepy.

  • Hard News: A better thing to believe in, in reply to Tom Semmens,

When you have pro-National, ex-media works head Brent Impey as head of the NZRFU then the temptation to use all that soft power was always going to be to much for Impey and Key.

People keep telling me not to call it the NZRFU, I suspect the reason they changed the name was because people were starting to twig to what the “FU” stood for

Here in Dunedin we have a related case – where a potential suicide commingled with a large theft scandal within the city council and the Coroner’s Act has meant that public discussion of the city’s response to the scandal (for example in the online ODT) has been squashed – there are open questions about whether other people within the DCC were involved (some were asked to leave or left on their own), or benefited, and should have been prosecuted

At one level it all stinks of a cover-up, but masquerading as the Coroner’s Act, who knows?

Some time, probably in the early 70s, my Mother bought a copy of the LRSB for us kids to read … so yes what Ian said about parents

while yes, no one else gets your vote, they would only get your vote once your choice had been eliminated as the lowest polling flag.

These are single transferable votes, your vote only is contribiuted to one flag at a time, not fractions spread across multiple flags

(STV, where you're electing multiple candidates, say 2 flags, does end up with fractional votes being spread around after one of the candidates you've chosen has been elected - but not in this case)
