  • Hard News: Game Lorde, in reply to Russell Brown,

Her fitness and strength is going to be an issue if she’s on a demanding schedule, but they’re not going to send her out on tour.

But performing in your first few big gigs is going to be emotionally exhausting in a way that doesn't reflect what it will be like when she becomes accustomed.

He could be being deliberately vague to stir up a story, and "a number of MPs" is anywhere from zero to all of them. I'm sure there's some people who hate Cunliffe, that was evident last time around. But the bitter hatred might be restricted to actually quite a small group.

Of course, even if the tests worked, you’d need a reliable way to tell if the result you were looking for actually *would* be a good fit in your workplace.

Indeed, there's quite a lot of work where having a duplicitous nature makes you the perfect fit. Management, for example, which is probably why they want to weed out the competitors :-)

Competent assessment report interpreters can see through this behaviour in the results of the assessment and will check with referees for confirmation.

Heh, I've read that they always ask you about porn during a lie detector test, because you'll probably lie, and then they can get the baseline. It is actually possible to ask people questions that they perfectly legitimately do not want to answer honestly.

What would be the point of me saying “I think this is all time-wasting bullshit” to someone who has bought into this enough to sit there and present it with a straight face, playing their own little part?

It's important that we weed out the malcontents from our public libraries. Whenever I'm trying to find a book on 18th Century card tricks of the Ukraine and the librarian eventually gives up, I wonder what tests they cheated on to get where they are.

But modern fighters are designed with knowledge of likely enemy counter-measures in mind.

Sure they are, just as modern bows and arrows are designed with laser sights. But they're still a weapon that has had its day. In terms of cutting edge offensive power, unpiloted devices really do have the edge. They're cheaper, you don't morally care if they get destroyed, and they can perform a far higher specification, can take more g's, have less weight so they can go a lot faster, and they're smaller, harder to see coming, or circling around. They can hit with high accuracy, and can be guided from spotters on the ground, using drones, or even satellites, or from pre-programmed coordinates. Fighter jets would fly around aimlessly, with nothing to fight, whilst their entire ground based infrastructure is destroyed under them. If they were spotted they could pretty much be followed back to where-ever they need to land and blown up there, even if they have the capacity to evade a sudden storm of homing missiles.

I’ve found the Perceiving/Judging aspect helpful to understand.

Yes, very much so. I would rather have Js designing systems and Ps looking after them. Unfortunately, design is paid way more than support, so people tend to rate themselves as Js more. It also sounds more professional, in isolation - the methodical planning etc. But there's nothing professional about someone melting down when their plans come unstuck.

I found the Myer Briggs analysis useful when done on myself, by myself. It was also somewhat helpful as a way of looking at potential conflict in a team I was managing, mostly to help appreciate that there really are different styles in the way people deal with things, and many of them have advantages and disadvantages in different contexts.

there’s around a 50% chance that you will fall into a different personality category compared to the first time you took the test.

Since Myer-Briggs forces binary categorization, you can't choose a middle score, and you can easily be flipped from one group to the binary opposite in one of the 4 dimensions. Or even more than one of the dimensions if you were on marginal scores for multiple. If you flipped on all 4 you'd end up with a diametrically opposite personality type, just from changing "slightly agree" to "slightly disagree" on 4 vague statements.

I wouldn’t imagine we’ll be seeing many fighters taking on fighters in any war.

Not in a war against a superpower, anyway. Between two similarly armed non-superpowers, you might have an actual air battle.
