  • Hard News: We invented everything,

That Noeline looks all class Joe.

She's still dining out on her 15 minutes. I'd be careful, though - her Sylvania Waters partner Laurie once knocked out a few of a neighbour's teeth with a garden hose.

  • Bookmarks: One-shot websites,

This work of art hasn't been updated in years, but at least it's still there. Clicking on the obscure ENTER buttons opens further dated wonders from the political yesteryear, including a pop-up where you can confess your daily sin.

    Some very cool mouseovers too.

    Ouch...

Heh. "All the best" - except to you "atheists of limited education" who may happen to be lurking.

How did giraffes get their long necks?

Must ask the Mormons next time they drop by. No point raising it with the Jehovahs though, giraffes don't seem to figure in their cosmology. Does anyone know why paradise always looks like Switzerland in Watchtower magazines?

  • Cracker: About a Boy,

Does anyone know where the insult 'egg' came from? I know it's in Macbeth, and possibly more Shakespeare - but how the hell did we end up with it? It fascinates me.

Me too. It's at least as common in Australia as it is here. Very big with people who say "Mate" a lot, as in "Yore an egg, mate."

  • Southerly: The Problem With Religion,

What's the difference between his "There is only one truth, and that's my truth" and that of organised religions?

Dawkins and his ilk don't go doorknocking, although it wouldn't surprise me if they took it up. But yes, making a belief of unbelief is a royal pain.

Re. Top Gear, I know a few people in the motor trade, none of them find it interesting. It seems to be the kind of show where you head out to the garage to do blokey stuff while the women tune in.

  • Southerly: The Problem With Religion,

Incidentally, I've read the Bible a couple of times, and have never found any mention of Jesus transforming children into goats, so I suppose it was invented by my grandfather purely in order to enrage proselytizers.

He possibly adapted that from Pinocchio, which is understandable, Pinocchio being a thin knock-off of Jesus, right down to having holes in his hands and feet.

Also, you don't have to be a believer to deliver meals on wheels.

  • Up Front: Time for an Intervention,

Joe, Sideshow is a rightwing extremist, why would he have any love for Labour/2021/watch-this-space?

I'm not aware that I've even so much as hinted that he might. As his reaction to the rumours of Anderton's candidacy shows, he's easily rattled. But a rightwing extremist? While his sympathies certainly seem to gravitate in that direction, Parker gives the impression of not really standing for anything much. He's obedient to his backers, and is no more his own man than Brash ever was.

  • Up Front: Time for an Intervention,

Joe, you could hardly say Side Show did a hatchet job on Bennett (who has left the building), anymore than Peters did to Brash.

Not sure what you mean with your mention of Peters and Brash. Yes, Barnett (not Bennett) could be said to have "left the building" as far as local politics goes. Sideshow's little hatchet job, for such I believe it to be, may well have contributed to that.

For around three years prior to the 2007 Chch. local body elections there were persistent rumours that Tim Barnett was planning to step down as member for Chch central and run for mayor. Many were disappointed when this didn't happen. While I'm hardly an unqualified fan of Tim Barnett, his possible candidacy represented the only credible left-wing challenge to Parker's ascendancy. Rather than appearing magnanimous in victory, Parker's rush to neutralise any possible future Barnett candidacy revealed him as being weak and spiteful.
