The other comment I've seen is that it's quite telling that the first time a woman wins Best Director, it's for a film that is not only seen as a men's topic (however inaccurate that is) but is almost exclusively about men and male experiences.
Yeah, I would have preferred Deepa Mehta too. But it goes back I think to how difficult it is for women to direct at all, especially in the United States. You can count the female directors of non independent feature films on the fingers of what - one hand?

Yeah, sorry, but your line of attack against the reporters is just vile. And it's not as if the point hasn't been made on this thread that the actions of the Herald might well constitute entrapment, and that Kurariki is a victim in this rather appalling incident too.

I still think the indignation about Avatar is a bit ritualised.
One could say the same of the praise, provided one was into dismissing opposing arguments out of hand like that. Personally I found the film quite awful and I like to think I had valid reasons and was honest in my assessment.
