When it comes to GMO’s, I am not convinced either way. What I want is the choice to avoid GMO’s in the food chain until their safety is proven. Is that so loony? Sounds if anything libertarian and freedom-like to me.

Not to me. Libertarian and freedom-like is to say you can just avoid buying it if you really have a problem with it, just like is the case with, say, inorganic pesticides, or the monocultural end-results of selective breeding like dominant our shelves already.

Recently we’ve all learned that the old maxim “you’re not paranoid if they really are out to get you” applies to being worried about secret police reading all your online communications too

Isn't the saying "Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean they are not out to get you"?

It had better, or what’s the point of rearranging the deckchairs

They want the government. That does not necessarily mean the Greens as their only partner. They could make sufficient ground to gain the government and still come a long way short of not needing NZF.

Yup, which is how it's looking at the moment. This could change, of course, and I sure hope it does.

Can't think of anything sensible to say on this turn of events other than that I'd personally change back to voting Labour if it's Cunliffe. If it's someone else, I'd need to be convinced, but Robertson seems pretty good and I doubt his sexual orientation would be a major factor in the Labour turnout in this day and age of homophobes having NZ First to vote for anyway. What it might do is compromise chances of a deal with NZ First, though, which still looks necessary.

As Danyl showed on Dimpost, you can get a good idea of what people think of politicians by letting Google auto suggest completions to “<their name> is”. I only get 2 suggested autocompletes for “Jacinda Ardern is”:
    1. “Jacinda Ardern is hot”
    2. “Is Jacinda Ardern married?”

    Try “John Key is"…it’s fun.

Though it got not much coverage, I see that National support was down to 44% (from 51% in the poll before) in the latest Roy Morgan.

    Wow, that's a big move.

  • Up Front: The Missing Stair and the…, in reply to Russell Brown,

Can't think of anyone who really fits the bill in my life either. But there really aren't a large number of people whose company I can't avoid. The father-in-law is an annoying fool, but lives in Oz, so meetings are rare and mostly about my wife and kids seeing him. As with you, there are some people who make me nervous on account of their imbalance, but no one who revels in annoying me, that I'm aware of. Could be luck. Or good handling. Or speaking from the heart of the privileged demographic myself. Or being physically imposing enough to deter aggression, whilst amiable enough not to provoke it. Or a bit of all of that.

At what proportions can you free yourself from onerous family gatherings by saying “you know – I think everybody there would have a much better time if I didn’t go”?

You'll never be allowed to know that threshold, lest you treat it as a target :-)
