  • Hard News: The Press, Privacy and The Paps,

John Campbell has made a pretty good job of that.

I applaud him, although there's always one person whose image consists in not having much of an image. Also, describe to me what would happen if he were seen at a restaurant dating a bloke.

(If he is openly gay and it hasn't reached my admittedly insulated ears I would say well done to the man for keeping his affairs private.)

  • Hard News: The Press, Privacy and The Paps,

The debate there, of course is around to what extent people give up their privacy when they make their Faustian pacts with the "women's" mags.

See, I just don't understand that. Is it a Faustian pact, or is it in fact a requirement of the job as an anchorperson? Is it even possible not to make a pact with the mags if you're Alison Mau? Withdraw your image? And then what would happen, seeing as it's unlikely that a sector of the public would cease to take a prurient interest in your life? I suspect Kurariki never made a pact with anybody, Faustian or otherwise, but that hardly protected him from the HoS.

I trust Russell won't introduce her as "state-owned broadcaster autocue-reader Alison Mau", but otherwise, yes, the ever-increasing prurient bullshit has to stop.

Also: here's hoping I'll finally get to see Media 7. The channel is a recent addition to the basic Telstra cable package in Wellers but for the last two wednesdays I've been otherwise detained and in progressively catastrophic fashion. All going well, I have popcorn at the ready.

  • Field Theory: And like that, it's gone,

More of that and less curling which always seemed to be on when I was watching, sometimes on three channels at a time

Wasn't that weird. I thought about halfway through that they might as well rename the winter olympics "Curling, Biathlon and some other sports." Or even "Curling, etc."

The sky hockey was painful, having to sit through the commentator who seemed to be British, and just making up hockey terms as he went along.

Not only that, but in the customary fashion of British commentators in all sports they a) kept asking strings of inane pre-emptive questions instead of calling the game, along the lines of "is this the power play when they finally score?" Just wait and see, you drongo. And b) they were only able to readily recognise the players in the anglo teams, which reached truly grotesque proportions in the two semifinals. If you didn't actually watch the screen you could be excused to think that Finland and Slovakia were never in possession of the puck.

By the way, for PAS regulars, this explains why Giovanni was a bit argumentative last week and then went silent.

It doesn't go anywhere near explaining why I was argumentative I'm afraid - I'm just drawn that way. :-)

I'm trending Craig on this one. We all know about the pressures of the workplace but it's really hard not to form the opinion that accepting to go on this assignment as it seems to have been conceived was just asking for unpleasant things to happen and in fact willing them to happen. The editors of course bear the greatest share of the blame, but I'm not prepared to exonerate the reporters on spec just because they were the victims of abuse either. How did they think it was going to play out?

ETA: Beyond that, Julie is right that we don't have enough information of course. But surely in most countries a press council with teeth would be investigating this with a view to come down on the Herald and, if necessary, its reporters like a ton of proverbial bricks?

By the way, I come from Italy: I know some of you might be shocked by this revelation, but it's about time I came out of that particular closet.

(male readers may care to indicate whether this could be true, although that might be too gross for this space!)

In parts of my country it's a pretty normal thing to do. And has got nothing whatsoever to do with the presence or not of members of one's favourite sex.
