  • Hard News: Budget 2011: While you wait,

So, how bad can the bad news be?

  • Hard News: Some Lines for Labour, in reply to Che Tibby,

once they ditch The Kedge they could be very respectable

    She's retiring at the election.

  • Hard News: Playing the Man, in reply to nzlemming,

That's just response times, I think. I suspect the qualitative measure might be less flattering, but you'd have to ask I/S about that.

Brownlee is one of the Ministers I had in mind when I was talking about grubby paws. It took me three requests and a complaint to the Ombudsman to get him to admit that there weren't any milestons for catching Australia, and that he'd made up the (highly politicised) "milestones" he gave to the House.

  • Hard News: Playing the Man, in reply to Matthew Poole,

I think a defamation claim against the sitting PM and the head of the military would be quite entertaining. Key might be able to use Privilege

They were made in his weekly press conference. Unless Parliament happens to be sitting there, the Beehive theatrette is not covered by Parliamentary privilege.

  • Hard News: The witless on the pitiless,

He was a muderous religious fascist.

Indeed. But even murderous religious fascists deserve a fair trial. Bin Laden was simply gunned down in cold blood.

  • Hard News: You know what ..., in reply to Russell Brown,

They basically dared people to call Jerry Mataparae a liar instead.

    I'll do it.

When given a choice between trusting a journalist with sources, and a government with every reason to lie, I will pick the journo every time.

  • Legal Beagle: Practical considerations, in reply to Graeme Edgeler,

That assumes that his opponents will contest. If his major opponent comes from the McGillicuddy Serious Party like Winston's did in 1993, or the Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party like Tariana's did in 2004, the precedent will be worth much less.

I expect it'll be the Hapu Party, which is only slightly more serious.

Oh, frak that -- the concern trolling about the public purse gets trotted out by political hack too bloody often.

Well, you know something -- democracy costs.

Indeed. And I expect that if Hone wasn't seeking a new mandate, the same people currently complaining about the cost would be complaining that he was illegitimate because he had founded a new party.

  • Hard News: Any excuse for a party, in reply to James Butler,

    [me not mentioning LARP :-)]

We tolerate all sorts of abhorrent things in fiction - murder, rape, genocide, feudalism - because they lead to interesting stories. That doesn't mean they have any place in the real world.
