  • Hard News: TiVo and some tunes,

I am a bit worried that there will be yet another private-format EPG feed

Yeah. It's frustrating enough the M$ already doesn't play nicely with the existing EPG freeview feed.

The other nerdery related note, will be interesting to see if the tivo box is capable of recording just the H.264 stream. Currently, it seems with PCs recording freeview, its preserved in the transport stream (which includes some error correction), and makes for pretty big files (~5GB/hour). I'm buying a second terabyte hard drive, because the first one is full!

  • Hard News: TiVo and some tunes,

It will be great if Prime does end up on Freeview. Watching the analogue signal seems like such poor quality, and if I'm recording two different digital channels, then there's no tuner available for analogue. Also, it will be great if the broadband program guide is more widely available than just those with Tivos.

  • Hard News: After the Charter,

Slightly off topic, and I guess I'm vaguely in the vanguard of new technology, but I've been really well impressed with how TVNZ OnDemand plays on a 32" LCD. If the technology eventually evolves that people can download programming cheaply when they want it easily (as opposed to having to build their own computer and spend a few days frigging round with it). This I think would start to remove concerns about time of broadcast and lost opportunity cost.

Wednesday evening is a bit of a dead TV day, and I forgot to record Diplomatic Immunity, so watching that and the 1977 Top Town final was much preferable than whatever was happening live.

  • Hard News: After the Charter,

If I had a dollar for everyone who told me after the recording that Coleman reminded them of Key, I'd have ... five dollars.

I probably won't rewatch it, but I'm pretty sure it said gummint for government, and along with some of his jibes at academics, it seemed like a kind of othering that I think Key appears to use, to contrast themselves with the rather more academic former administration.

  • Hard News: After the Charter,

Did anyone else find something about Coleman's vocal delivery a little like someone else's? I guess the sandy blond hair kind of helps as well...

  • Hard News: Siren song,

Mmmmm Windows 7 Beta. It's just a pity there's not good EPG solution for terrestial Freeview HD (yet).

  • Southerly: Bob's House,

Steve's link suggests that Washington DC reinstated there's for the millennium, so that might be 4?

In other time related nerdery, I was explaining the time pips to a recent NatRad convert the other day, and how the exact start of the hour coincides with the start of the final pip, still synchronised to an atomic clock in the Hutt.

  • Southerly: Bob's House,

It seems that 1pm is sort of standard. I was pretty sure (and just double-checked) the Lyttelton timeball was dropped at 1pm

  • Hard News: Effectively Friday,

Hmm. I was hoping for some free font loving.
It amuses me that the site is mostly done out in courier. Perhaps they couldn't agree on what to use, so they went back to the fixed pitch standard.

Heh. I do kinda like courier, but it reminds me of the American Institute of Architects Building in Washington. I guess they couldn't decide on who would do it, so they got either a Soviet draftsperson to design them a nice soul-less concrete edifice.

  • Up Front: Girls Can Do Anything. You…,

I imagine it's the page with the biggest 'doggie ears' and all those there after...

Strangely not. I don't think the people that read them really read it for just that. They're certainly beloved by semi-insomniacs who read themselves to sleep.
