That may be an advantage in certain situations but for a lot of cooking you don’t want fast temperature changes until you decide.

I tend to get around that by not taking things off the element. I can see that the temperature curves are smoother, but OTOH, that does mean they could be suboptimal longer, if they get out of whack. Also the feedback time on adjustments is massive, so you have to tend the thing constantly. It's like taking a shower through a copper pipe 200m long. Sure, the water will be a stable temperature eventually. As in way too cold for a long time, and then way too hot, and you have to fiddle backwards and forwards to get it right. If the food is burning on a heavy pan, you're going to burn it much longer than on a thin pan.

GSM is encrypted and has been from the start. probably there is some work around but that seems to be an obvious example of a use case where citizens routinely communicate privately as they should.

It's not strong encryption, though. I doubt any intelligence agency couldn't crack it. Details of how to do it have been public knowledge for years.

The rule with tomatoes is to pretty much eat them when they are ripe. They seem to ripen quicker when warmer, so you can stretch a batch out by keeping them at different temperatures. But from experience, you're right about chilling them - that's the end of any further development.

I stretched them out this year mostly by timing when to take them - they ripen way faster when picked.

I'd lament the demise of film shooting, but projecting in that way - does it have any advantages whatsoever? Is there any aspect of the quality of the projection that is lost in a digital projection? I can't think of anything at all.

One can do a surprising amount with a microwave oven. It's very quick for some things that usually take quite a bit of time, and has the advantage of needing no tending at all. The main disadvantage is the lack of browning on top, although I believe there are various powders you can get which have a very similar effect. It's so easy I think it can rob you of one of the best parts of cooking - all the fooling around with it. Check out practically any book on microwave cookery - you can do baking, roasting, stews, sauces, rice, pasta, etc.

I often microwave bacon. Crispy, and no mess, in a few minutes. If I'm cooking pancakes for the kids, the frying pan is already taken.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Full-on First Person, in reply to Lilith __,

Is it possible for a female performer to appear in a music video without being seen as sexually provocative?

Don't know, but old men who look for long periods of time at young girls, staring directly into their eyes, are considered creepy. It's a hard feeling to shake, even though it's just me and the screen. Maybe you're right, perhaps Tom was projecting.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Full-on First Person, in reply to Tom Semmens,

She is a talented teen, no more. There are tons like her out there, there is nothing in her music yet that screams superstar to me.

Perhaps not but there's also nothing that screams "couldn't be a superstar" either. I like both her hits. That's a bloody good ratio for me and a female teen vocalist. It's a funny old game and I wish her the best of luck with stardom.

If the sight of a young woman singing makes you uncomfortable, I think that says more about you than it does about her.

That's a bit unfair. I think some of the point of the video is to create an intimacy with her. Why else would you look at someone looking back at you basically doing nothing much for 3 minutes? I think there's some kind of commentary intended by it, an attempt to make the audience a little bit uncomfortable. I actually got bored with it, and did something else with my eyes, but kept the music on because it's good. Tom has some sort of point in there about a kind of voyeuristic implication. "Pedobear", though? That's just Tom being his edgy self, how he rolls.
