Yes, Danyl, because classical music and jazz are exactly the same thing as ice cream. And you're right, so let's go down that road. Why have libraries? Why have literary and artistic prizes and endowments? Why have liberal arts and music taught in universities? These are all hobbies after all, aren't they..

I can't see how it serves the public good for the taxpayer to own a classical radio station.
This riles me quite a bit. Wellington has the NZSO. Auckland and Christchurch have philarmonic orchestras. Classical music, plus all the kinds of less than commercial genres supported by the concert programme, is important to a lot of people in a lot of places around the country and you can't just leave it to the market to look after it. Leave Radio New Zealand Concert the hell alone.

Look, I'm generally the first person to join in the Kedgley bashing, but the first half of your comment notwithstanding, the idea that the omission from the Minister's quote altered its meaning is ludicrous. Andre summed it up rather well.

No, you're quite right, I was being excessively polemical. There is a private school in our area that does good work with children with disabilities and is admirably inclusive (so long as you're happy to go along with the Christian thing, but fair enough). It still doesn't go anywhere near balancing the problem of all the private schools (and some of the public ones) that do just the opposite, and which ought to be addressed as a matter of urgency, but is never going to in the name of the "freedom of choice" faux egalitarian credo.

Craig gives a masterclass is disingenousness, since even with the omitted phrase the Minister's quote was about as clear a threat as "lovely premises you have here - shame if something were to happen to them - not that it's likely to of course."
ETA: the "masterclass" bit refers to how Craig presented the item on Facebook I guess. Still.

People tried hard (and it worked for our older boy), but the lack of anything for us in the system for our younger son is a source of anger and frustration to me. I hope Giovanni has better luck with his daughter, who is also ASD, and that he does not find -- as is the case for some parents who approach some of the trendier schools in Auckland -- that a child who is different isn't welcome.
Lucia will go to a primary school that we know to be very accepting, and we are confident they'll do their darndest. But it's not what you'd call a trendy school, and we are aware of how some of those have dealt with families in our situation.
After primary, oh, that's just going to be fun to find out.
