...it takes a planet to raise a child
but those villages help as well...

I'd settle for having my children raised by the Village People.

But if they're not depressed and anxious and focussed on material goods and money, how will they become good consumers and workers?

Boy, Mark Fisher is really doing a number on you, isn't he? :-)

Also, communities that wish to run their own education system ought to be cast in the same circle of hell as the people who wish to keep more of their pay packet because they can spend it more wisely than the gummint.

  • Hard News: Standards Matter,

    • Never use a metaphor, simile or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.

    • Never use a long word where a short one will do.

    • If it is possible to cut out a word, always cut it out.

    • Never use the passive where you can use the active.

    • Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent.

    • Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous.

    For short: always be boring.

For somebody who wrote the books that he wrote, Orwell was a much greater supporter of graying conformity than is generally acknowledged.

  • Up Front: Do My Homework For Me,

I thought it was generally accepted that Levin is the most boring place in New Zealand. Has Clive eclipsed it?

Oh yes, in fact the whole point of Transmission Gully seems to be that it will enable motorists to reach Levin from Wellington 23 minutes sooner.

As I always say when we drive into Levin: boy, if only we could have been here 23 minutes ago!

  • Hard News: Standards Matter,

I am sure that the Italian Government has printed her face on money because she is regarded as a great Italian innovator.

That is correct. And it's worth mentioning that the 1,000 lire note was the basic unit of currency before the Euro, like the one dollar note in the US - a pretty high honorific.

A couple of years ago I obtained one of said notes back home and I believe the Montessori teachers at our school had it framed.

Wow, thank you for that Jolisa. Public Address over the last few days has quietly outdone itself.

The connection between the tests and every other facet of school became clearer and sharper as time went on.

I was thinking while reading that it sounded like your child went to my primary school. And yes, we were strong on testing, but there were no national standards as such, it was simply the overall philosophy, which was about contents and hurdles and rules and making the child fit in the peg hole. I have it on the authority of friends with kids back home that it's still the case to a large extent. And incidentally, I've met a number of Italians over here in my situation that have either left to go back so they could send their kids to that type of school, or are relentlessly critical of NZ schools because "they don't teach anything". I happen to think it's just the opposite, and that it is the product of a philosophy with deep roots and supported by dedicated teachers and administrators. I very much doubt that national standards alone, especially once they've been wisely integrated into the system by people in our MoE who know just how lucky we are, Frederick, could undo all that. (And I am against them, that's understood. I just don't think they could be devastating to quite that extent.)

  • Hard News: Standards Matter,

Enquiry learning has been done for a while at our school and the teachers have reported quite amazing results. I remember especially a description of students verbalising and sharing their strategies for solving maths problems - the educators involved seemed to think it was a big deal.

    And it's expensive.

It's so expensive in fact that in Italy they printed Maria Montessori's face directly onto the money. It was easier that way.
