So, Nikki Kaye has Auckland Central by 647, Trevor Mallard has Hutt South by 378. What are the chances of specials overturning those?
I'm also surprised how slim Peter Dunne's margin is. Only 930. It was my impression he was a reasonably popular local MP, hence his longevity, but I guess it's not that simple. Had all those votes for Tane Woodley gone to Virginia Andersen....

Also: where’s the Green party vote?
That. And Kelvin Davis has overtaken Hone Harawira in Te Tai Tokerau, with his margin growing as the vote comes in?
I'm worried.

The government will further seek powers to proscribe visits to cities or regions where terror groups are active.
People travelling to such areas without a valid reason could face prosecution.
"There's legislation that will shortly come before the Parliament to boost the range of offences," Abbott said on Thursday without providing details.
"It's not always easy to prove that someone has been engaged in terrorist activity overseas.
"It's often very hard to get witnesses ... so we'll be strengthening offences in this area."

Self censorship. Finest kind.
No, responsibility. The law is clear and whether you agree with it or not, it's there for a good reason. Not that hard to respect it, is it?
Self censorship is when you're negotiating a vague, grey area knowing that if you cross an ill-defined line you may face some ill-defined consequences. The only thing you know with certainty in a situation like that is that you don't want to cross the higher-ups.
Treasure what you've got in NZ.

A poignant question to ask yourself is do you believe that humans are essentially good or evil?
That really is a pointless question.
No it isn't. Are you with Mencius in believing that people are essentially good, but environment, education (or lack thereof) and upbringing determine whether they turn out good or bad? Or Xunzi in believing that people are essentially evil and need strict laws and harsh punishments to keep them in line?
The first is mainline Confucianism, which, for all its patriarchal mysogyny, is essentially optimistic about human nature. All we need to do is make sure our kids are raised in a good environment and get a good education, and they'll turn out good. The second leads to Han Feizi and Legalism, which then leads directly to rulers like Qinshihuang and Mao Zedong.
So, not a pointless question at all. But it is still too early in the morning for all this.

We’ve gone from guessing that cholera has something to do with one well in London
Isn't there some group in the US that monitors internet chatter and has picked up outbreaks of disease, including the current Ebola outbreak, long before anybody else has noticed? Too early in the morning, not yet caffeinated, but I seem to remember reading about them fairly recently.

I have no comment on the content of this article, but man, the photo they chose for it, that's awesome. Almost worth hanging in a Capture thread - "Unwittingly and/or Unintentionally Revealing Photos of the True Nature of Politicians". Nah, not catch enough a title. But still, check that photo out. Nah, couldn't resist, screen cap'd it.

Hmm, wonder why I’m not surprised the National Party is involved….
http://www.radionz.co.nz/news/national/254918/nz-link-to-chinese-anti-corruption-caseInteresting. But why doesn’t Radio NZ name anybody? This report on ifeng, attributed to Global Times correspondents in NZ Wáng Miǎo and Qū Xiángyǔ, names the ex-vice-mayor as 曹鉴燎/Cáo Jiànliáo. Also:
曹鉴燎的妻子、子女和情妇早在曹去年12月被广州市纪委调查前就已迁居新西兰。
Cáo Jiànliáo’s wife, children [yes, plural] and mistress had already moved to New Zealand before the Guangzhou Municipal Disciplin committee began its investigation in December last year.
It says all this information came from the Financial Times.
There’s more, but I’m running out of time. Perhaps somebody could find Jamil Anderlini’s original FT report?

Speaker: The End of Trust, in reply to
Never stop criticizing government, it’s good for them. It’s a wonderful thing to even be allowed to do, many countries simply murder their critics, but don’t forget that what we’re fighting to hold on to is incredibly nice and we are privileged to be here to fight for it. Holding a light to the bastards just reminds them not to leave a mess on their short trip through office.
