Superstition has never been or will it ever be a "brake". And the time scales in the sort of differences you speak of are so short, evolution just wouldnt have kicked in.

scientific rationality, has reached a dead end because while it is powerful it doesn’t really comport with human behavior.
Who on this green earth ever said that it is or had to? And if people just do whatever the fuck comes into their head, if this person is advocating that, then kiss this planet goodbye.
No rationality is not a good guide to behaviour, if your looking for guide try honesty with yourself first then others. Scruples, empathy, compassion instead of me first, making a "buck" ie loads of money to embellish/prettify your surrounding so your death can seem a distant event.
Ferchrissakes think deeply! Try silencing the endless chatter in your mind.
