  • Up Front: Oh, God, in reply to WH,

Sometimes you people act like real wankers.

We prefer to be called 'people of compulsory masturbatory habits' these days, thanks.

But that aside, I'm not exactly sure what you're suggesting, in terms of how 'us people' should be modifying our behaviour. UT raised a line of argument and a conclusion that was conclusively shot down on a number of occasions by a number of commentators, at least one of whom is the proud owner of a nice shiny certificate with 'philosophy degree' written on it, and so has at least a passing knowledge of what they're talking about. These challenges caused multiple changes in his/her baseline posiiton, to the point where at least one commentator simply couldn't understand the point they were getting at anymore, it was tangled in so many knots.

All laced through with an underlying 'I know more than you ignorant dupes, enough to burst your complacent bubbles. You may queue to kiss my enlightened arse', as Joe has pointed out.

Are you suggesting that everyone here continue to extend patience and the most impeccable of good manners, with nary a hint of exasperation, ad infinitum?

How would that work with someone like 'James', on the Christchurch stories thread?

  • Up Front: Oh, God,

It's kind of entertaining, in a 'knife-to-a-gunfight' sort of a way.

Although I suspect the knife in this case is more of a spork.

If he knows stuff then he should just say it, IMHO, instead of getting so theatrical and vendettive.

I'm no fan of KDC, but I think it should be borne in mind that the man is effectively fighting for his life. If he wasn't wealthy, he would almost certainly be rotting behind bars in the US by now. What we think is 'best' and what he wants to do to try to ensure his own survival are sometimes aligned, but we don't have the skin in the game that he does.

    Copying data is not unlawful.

Have you heard of copyright law? Or does that not form part of the legal world of 1840 which you inhabit?

Do Stuff writers get incentives for page loads?

It's far easier than doing any real work. That's incentive enough.

As mentioned on another thread, they're busy transcribing the irrelevant witterings of Judith Collins' sister. Good job guys! Much easier than real journalism! Is it time for lunch yet?

    money

Which is why Mr Dotcom has been such an interesting wild card. Not of 'the right', but plenty of cash. A single card won't make a winning hand, but it's shaken up the pack, so to speak.

    And this:

[It’s] about people who were worth less and who were no longer necessary, as maybe 10 or 15% of my country is no longer necessary to the operation of the economy. It was about them trying to solve, for lack of a better term, an existential crisis. In their irrelevance, their economic irrelevance, they were nonetheless still on the ground occupying this place called Baltimore and they were going to have to endure somehow.

That’s the great horror show. What are we going to do with all these people that we’ve managed to marginalise? It was kind of interesting when it was only race, when you could do this on the basis of people’s racial fears and it was just the black and brown people in American cities who had the higher rates of unemployment and the higher rates of addiction and were marginalised and had the shitty school systems and the lack of opportunity.

And kind of interesting in this last recession to see the economy shrug and start to throw white middle-class people into the same boat

I don’t know. It could just slide and slide and slide. The Great Depression was very noticeable because most of the industrial output of the world came from Europe and the USA. But now that’s shifted substantially, and it could just be a sustained downturn that never stops, as industry shifts to the Third World, until labour prices stabilize. We don’t have a New Deal up our sleeve this time, because that already happened, and the welfare state is older than my parents. We need a different idea

Probably depends on the underlying social structures on a country-to-country basis. I lean towards a 'snap' because I'm UK-centric, and I don't think there's enough of a safety net or social cohesion left here to prevent unrest. Escalating rioting is a decent possibility, even in the near future.

NZ is probably better placed to avoid a sudden drop. Even given recent (last four decades) trends, the divisions aren't (yet) as deep.
