  • Hard News: Done like a dinner,

Why are we arguing climate change here?

Emma has the answer, well dissected - Tink, Tink.

(I _think_ it is a young Brown Creeper, Pipipi, but am really not sure)

I'd agree with you, and about not being absolutely sure too, without the additional matters of being in a small flock, calls etc. I'm not familiar with sub-adults up close, and haven't seen any for a while (they being absent from the North Island and all).

There's risk or opportunity for a falling angel there?

Lines in the sky. With colourful sundog. :-)

Colourful! - never seen or captured a dog so strong.

Here's a quarter halo so pallid by comparison, but the lines have beautiful curves.
And walnut foliage, for sunscreen, and because anything walnut is beautiful too :-)
    Bonus blue.

Yesterday, coppery overcast developing in the late afternoon over the western hills, in the foreground Gisborne’s port, formerly the rivermouth, with the Turanganui River beyond where it was relocated in the 1920s.

Various summer enjoyments of a warm Easter Monday at the beach, and rivermouth still known romantically as “The Cut”.

Shift the angle a bit and Young Nick’s statue may be seen among the people around the point.

A million houses generating that would give us 4000MW. This is around 4 times our current total capacity from all power sources.

Not to deny that 4000 MW of distributed solar capacity would be huge, but current NZ electicity demand ie 3.30pm 2Apr13 is over 4700 MW and there is plenty of spare generating capacity.

… a counter-point to this one where if you look at the clouds it looks like Gillespies Pt/Kohaihai is a camouflaged rocket launcher.
Whereas if you look at the non-clouds, well there’s all sorts of lovely triangles and opportunities for trigonometry ;-)

I'm sure this is an optical illusion: Rangitoto seems to be the source of the clouds.

Looks great - beautifully cropped to bring out and enhance the low angles.
But this is supposed to be about blue! Focus on the bits between the clouds and it looks like Rangitoto as an elegantly curved launching ramp for blue ...

  • Hard News: Done like a dinner,

Rod Oram in the second half of this 21 minutes with Kathryn Ryan on Nine-to-Noon this morning was very good as usual. Includes the information from Transpower that the upgrade of the link from Central Otago to the upper Waitaki that Lucy described above as a modest-cost project to allow the majority of Manapouri generation to be transmitted north - that can be completed in (only) two construction seasons.

So given Rio Tinto's 'threat' is that if they can't get their electricity cost down low enough they will close the smelter in 5 years (not next month) - then no problem there. In particular the serious money on the upgrade to double+ the capacity of the HVDC link between the Waitaki and the North Island has been spent, it will be ready soon. So the 'surplus' generating capacity can be flexibly available ~everywhere.

But what effect on Mighty River Power share value, and Genesis, Meridian? Oh dear, what a conundrum.
