  • Hard News: Transmogrithingy,

I'm more interested in the SJD album - has anyone reviewed it yet? Graham Reid - anyone?

I'd like the album but surely someone has heard it?

  • Hard News: Arrest the bastards at the border,

Ahem, Michael -Bryan Dods offered us the sandpit story on page 2 of this thread which in my view has been one of the best contributions so far.

I was very upset by a lanky snooty sounding boy who wanted total control of all the toys in the sandpit.

Michael Fay was born on 10.04.49 - so 50 years ago he would have been 8 years old - But Bryan suggested it was longer ago than that so lets say 1955 when MF was 6 years old.

Very scary and funny all at the same time.

  • Hard News: Arrest the bastards at the border,

OK - Seems like people have very short memories.

Even though this action related to a separate episode in the Tranz Rail soap opera it is worth noting that the Brian Gaynor analysis from August 28, 1999 "Winebox winners and losers"

Thanks Paul Brislen, RB and others for mentioning it. It is still worth reading if anyone wants to return to the original post topic. (Thanks Merc for the wiki link - I went there and added the Gaynor link as they wanted a citation) so hopefully this information won't get lost again.

I remember when Gaynor wrote this particular column I cut it out an framed it as perhaps the first time FR had really called to account in a very public way. Gaynor

"The combined loss of minority shareholders is $277 million while the Fay, Richwhite interests have made a profit of $509 million.

These figures confirm two basic facts about the commercial scene in New Zealand:
*The tax avoidance business has been extremely lucrative for a number of individuals.
    * Some company directors have insufficient regard for minority shareholders."

Also thanks to Bryan for the sandpit story - really liked that one. Somehow they missed that little gem in the unauthorised Biography which came out in 1990 by I.Morrison, F.Haden and G.Cubis.

Anytime someone representing FR offers $20m you can be very sure that it was a great deal for them to do so.

  • Hard News: The Civility Code,

Don't think a code is needed here.

Over at IBM there are some 27,000 bloggers (out of around 300,000 staff) so they have a corporate code that has been around in various forms since '97

The IBM set of blogging guidelines which is worth reading.

I have included one of them below as an example. Most of them would be OK in my view.

    Be who you are
Some bloggers work anonymously, using pseudonyms or false screen names. IBM discourages that in blogs, wikis or other forms of online participation that relate to IBM, our business or issues with which the company is engaged. We believe in transparency and honesty. If you are blogging about your work for IBM, we encourage you to use your real name, be clear who you are, and identify that you work for IBM. Nothing gains you notice in the “blogosphere” more than honesty — or dishonesty. If you have a vested interest in something you are discussing, be the first to point it out. But also be smart about protecting yourself and your privacy. What you publish will be around for a long time, so consider the content carefully and also be judicious in disclosing personal details.

  • Island Life: A Pylon In My Back Yard,

HAd quite forgotten about Gigantor till now

A quick check on the Gigantor show he looked less like a pylon and more like a oil can and was Japanese in origin "Iron Man#28" from 1958 cartoon and adapted for the West in about 1964. Even more surprising there is a new seies coming called Gigantor G3.

gigantor incl all 52 episodes on DVD etc.

  • Hard News: The Public Good,

Famous for being in the right place at the right time, as of June 1st, Jimmy Iovine will no longer be employed by Universal Music. He is ankling the firm to return to New York City to run LimeWire, the P2P service based on the Gnutella protocol.......someone from the music business, who understands relationships, who understands musicians, who understands the audience.

Enjoyed this extra info from Simon - great to hear of another angle -thanks for that.

  • Hard News: Memories of the attic press,

RIU indeed made a huge contribution to not just the music industry but the numbers of aspiring writers like myself at the time. Even though as I recall most of the time enthusiastic and obscure reviews were often turned down. It did however offer a very wide ranging platform for music of all kinds and was required reading.

Despite huge writing workloads for my enrolled courses I always spent more time on writing pieces for RIU than I did fro them. Many were never submitted but the positive influence on aspiring writers at the time was great.

  • Hard News: That's Entertainment,

But a question: how many readers would pay a one or two dollars a week subscription for PA without the ads? Like everything, it would cost yet more money to set up (and I've spent thousands in the last few months), but is it worth pursuing?

A no ads Subscription might work. For a successful subscription model have a look at Rocksbackpages for an example where it does work. That is an archive of many magazines of music writing. (Actually if still have a few old RIU' stories it might be worth loading them up.) I did see Chris Bourke's name there.

For a site like PA though - I think the more "conversations" the merrier and premium subscription style space may not work.

  • Hard News: That's Entertainment,

Re: Your Listener column - On the loudness / compression subject - I have noticed the sound differences as I still don't have an ipod and use a real stereo to listen to music on.

That this excessive use of compression & audio trickery is actually exhausting is a key point.

And explaining the difference between loudness and volume etc.

There is a a great piece on austin360.com see link below - lots of other background on why/how this happens.

Montrone was essentially saying that there are millions of copies of CDs being released that are physically exhausting listeners, most of whom probably don't know why their ears and brains are feeling worn out.
