  • Speaker: Not quite what you may think,

Actually the more I stare at it 'qute' seems quite a nice word. Maybe we can find a use for it?

  • Hard News: Reading Material,

Just pausing to remember Alan Coren, passed away from cancer at 69.

Brilliant editior of Punch amongst many other things. Still remember him dressing up in Arab costume and standing in the visitor's gallery at the London stock exchange and accepting the insults from the traders on the floor during the first oil shock of 1973.

  • Hard News: Te Qaeda and the God Squad,

I thought the person who tried to turn away the car on a country road in the Ureweras on 'Campbell Live' last night came across as particularly unpleasant and belligerent. I thought the interviewer of Frances Mountier fom the Save Happy Valley Coalition on "Closeup' last night came across as particularly unpleasant and belligerent.

Colonel Kilgore: I love the smell of napalm in the morning, it smells like...victory.
Captain Willard: So why did you napalm the whole village?
Col. Kilgore: Because charlie don't surf.
    Apocalypse Now.
Charlie don't surf and we think he should, charlie don't surf and you know that it ain't no good, charlie don't surf for his hamburger mama, charlie's going to be a napalm star.
    The Clash, Charlie Don't Surf.

Here’s another one merc from Michael Connelly’s latest book ‘The Overlook’.

Bosch watched with growing dread as the members of the OHS chambered rounds in their weapons and put on helmets with face shields. Two of the men, who had been designated as the radiation containment team, began climbing into space suits.
‘This is crazy,’ Ferras said in a whisper.
    ‘Charlie don’t surf,’ Bosch replied.
    ‘What?’
    ‘Nothing. Before your time’.

  • Hard News: Te Qaeda and the God Squad,

was someone actually charged with "terrorism" for that kind of intent you wonder about the watering down of the seriousness of the crime though.

Che, No - not charged in the end, probably due to the very 'watering down' you mention.

  • Hard News: Te Qaeda and the God Squad,

Yeah, I agree completely. On the face of it, the bulk poisoning of milk has overtones of both economic sabotage and a public safety risk. It was entirely appropriate for the anti-terrorism squad to become involved, and equally appropriate for it to hand the matter on once the nature of the case was established. I really can't see why that's controversial.

Yes Russell I was thinking that times have really changed since 9/11 and perhaps what was once people playing silly buggers like letting off explosions for fun now have much more serious legal connotations. This is way off the topic I know but I was wondering how the introduction of the RCD rabbit virus by pissed off farmers would be handled now. Probably by full scale swoop’s on the woolsheds of the South Island high country.

  • Hard News: Te Qaeda and the God Squad,

nothing i have read before has ever screamed 'bored cop' like an 'anti-terrorism' squad being involved in a milk poisoning incident...

Presumably they were obliged to investigate under this:

"(b) a serious risk to the health or safety of a population:

The fact that no prosecution was made under the Terrorism Suppression Act 2002 we can speculate that the action didn’t meet the criteria of 'serious risk' but the section (b) does indicate why an investigation was undertaken in the first instance.

  • Hard News: Te Qaeda and the God Squad,

If true then this is a disheartening de-valuation and corruption of the meaning of the word "terror" to something more along the lines of "commercial annoyance".

Sorry should read 'anti-terrorism squad'. Actually I don't know what they are actually called but 'they' were invoved in the investigation.

  • Hard News: Te Qaeda and the God Squad,

yeah... but is that 'terrorism' or 'a crime'?
i think that's the key issue behind these arrests. are the police dealing with terrorists, or (lunatic) criminals?
now, let's say that fcking up someone's lawn is terrorism (which you aren't), wouldn't it be employed more often?
osama "i have a plan to strike fear into the heart of america"
no.2 "yes of wise master, what will we need?"
osama "first, we need the name of the gardener at the white house, and a rotary hoe..."

Now I’m no expert so I’ll happily put my 10 cents into the debate like everyone else. On a continuum with Save Happy Valley Coalition at one end and Osama at the other you might find they both end up under the ‘terrorism’ banner I believe. This is because SHVC is prepared to disrupt the economic activity of an SOE. From my limited knowledge I believe that economic disruption of the Nations interests does qualify. Someone correct me please.

The example that I’m aware of is the poisoning of milk from a dairy farm near Ashburton last year by a disgruntled employee which got into the larger milk collection and then had the potential to harm New Zealand’s reputation. The anti terror squad were involved in that investigation I understand.

  • Hard News: Te Qaeda and the God Squad,

People can eventually get so deeply involved in and seduced by their own arguments and end up believeing that they must act in a radical fashion or else.
I wonder if that has gone on here.

Yep. This could well be the common factor in the minds of the Police.
