Hard News: A cog in the Mediaworks machine, in reply to

This stuff is vital! I’ve occasionally skirmished with people who talk about income inequality, and especially how it has more-or-less evened out in NZ and isn’t increasing.
As far as I can make out, the data for, eg GINI all comes from the tax dept, and it’s not gross income, it’s taxable income. The first thing anyone with money does is get a good tax accountant. There are a bunch of ways to minimise your tax – in a country with no CGT it’s child’s play.
It seems pretty clear that wealth in NZ – and especially since property went ballistic – is far less equal than the GINI indicates.

There’s a problem not owning ALL the media. Competitors will run stories that don’t fit yr framing :)
ETA: Does owning a PR company and running 'Snout' constitute a conflict of interest? What about, e.g. - running a story about a mate's having written a book? Given her history, and that Glucina wants to be called a journalist, this is going to be closely scrutinised for a long time. -
Much of the appeal of Corbyn and Sanders (and Trump, in a different way, for that matter) is a long record of speaking honestly and consistently - and their 'outsider' status.
I can't remember where I read it, but none of these candidates have what someone described as the careful, nuanced wariness of other professional politicians. You can have no doubts what they value, and the policies they espouse.
Hilary Clinton? Andrew Little? I just don't know what they really believe, what they truly will fight for.
That's a huge problem for the 'middle way' - the messaging becomes so confused as to be little more than noise. -

why do we care about her house and who she owns it with?
I'm interested that it's the property of Pink PR. Because this is the company that Ms Glucina and The Herald claimed was "inactive" and had no clients, while she was writing for them.
Her personal finances are her own business (provided they are legal.) But her company deserves scrutiny. Currently the ombuds(wo)man is investigating Ms Glucina's correspondence with Rt Hon Key around ponytailgate.
It will be astonishing if the investigation actually outs all correspondence between the two. But I think there's legitimate public interest. -

Pink PR
The company with no clients she doesn't run? Love to see the accounts ...

i do find the sequence of events strung throughout this years media sector quite well timed.
I'd be surprised if it was a complete coincidence the flag selection/change process is ramping up as we go into a RWC.

Thanks again – I can hardly say it enough – for the recommendations of Elena Ferrante's 'Neopolitan Novels'. Just finished the final book. The whole series has been the most compelling reading I’ve done for years. Just staggeringly good!

Legal Beagle: Into the River/Interim Restrictions, in reply to

It sounds like the restrictions have effectively killed this book to date, at least in NZ. Just looked on Amazon and the kindle version isn’t available … but logged through anonymouse, there it was.
I wonder if anywhere else in the world is so determined to protect children from literature? The kindle version doesn't seem at all restricted.
Considering the other perils lurking, this just looks like paternalistic over-reach in precisely the wrong direction. -

Voting hypnoflag fnord is probably the best way to help avoid any of the four winning
Yep. If the 'anti-change', the 'anti-fern', the 'I love te koru', the 'I don't like JK', and the 'I don't like any of them' interests voted together, hypnoflag will easily beat the fern vote, which is likely to be split between the sporting symbol and the colourful red-and-blue version.
