  • Hard News: Tragedy into Crisis?,

I am reminded of a situation here in the UK a couple of years ago. In the Midlands iirc. Family having a suburban BBQ, ex partner of one arrives, shoots her with a shotgun and iirc at least one other person and leaves.

They ring for assitance and the police set up a cordon and will not let the ambulances attend. The people and their neighbours were all ringing and saying he was gone. Still they wait. One of the shot bled to death, it is possible but not conclusive that she could have been saved. BUT the police did not know that the offender was for eg in the house and pointing a firearm at the people telling them what to do 'or else'. The helicopter cannot see him if he is there for eg.

Same public incomprehension. Mind you if it had been the Met they would probably have charged in and shot everyone else there, especially if they were Glaswegian.

  • Hard News: Medical Matters,

Sigh, the downside of putting my best thoughts on the internet. I lose control of them and see them floating away on a stream of multicoloured electrons......

    ;-)

  • Hard News: Medical Matters,

Grant said: the same old tired medieval beliefs over and over and over like a deeply boring stuck record that nobody is listening to and nobody accepts. Yet still it goes around and around and around, signifying and dignifying nothing.

  • Hard News: Medical Matters,

Grant when you say something sensible that shows you understand biology then maybe you will deserve some sensible responses. But you have only shown how primitive is your understanding is, so we are replying appropriately. Over to you.

  • Hard News: Feeling Unserious,

Tony Kennedy you have it right about Rodrigo Y Gabriela, but Tamacun is better.

We first saw them went we went to see Courtney Pine in Edinburgh, these two who looked like roadies were on stage at the start. They put out two chairs, set up the mikes, brought out two guitars. Then sat down and just started playing them like you have never seen and heard acoustic guitar played before. We have signed CDs and everything! They are very nice people too.

They are so much better live, seen them do Stairway live in a cave in subterranean Edinburgh too just after he had worked it out. Gabriela didn't want to do it.

Hey Grant has that Physic turned up to let your blood yet? we told him to head to the big island off Cathay. Mind you he is travelling by camel train along the silk road, so it may take some months...

  • Hard News: Medical Matters,

Couldn't the last part of that be rewritten to be "I believe that crystals do not have paranormal powers (based on my scientific knowledge and complete lack of any verifiable proof that they do)".

No, I fail to believe it because there is no good evidence in favour of the hypothesis. The only belief I happen to hold is that the scientific method is the best way of knowing things. We use 'belief' far too freely IMO. We use when know would be a much better, more accurate term.

A volcano erupting tomorrow? Still fairly confident, but not so much. We believe it won't happen based on what scientists know about volcanos, and the data that they have about this volcano.

Yes, but the point is that science can put confidence intervals on its knowledge based on measuring something. There is nothing to measure when it comes to crystals and morphic fields. There is plenty to measure when it comes to volcanoes and that includes comparing what we measure know with what we meausured the last few times it errupted.

Knowledge that comes with error bars and probability measurements is called science. Knowledge that doesn't have these is what we call beliefs, we have beliefs about things we have an absence of or an incomplete knowledge of and are guesses about what might be there.

Sceptics about science are invited to leave via the window of this fifth floor room.

  • Hard News: Medical Matters,

Grant Dexter's comments about a conceptus being a baby, just a very small one shows he is still thinking like someone from the Middle Ages and that sperm are just little scrunched up homunculi and the man plants this as a seed in the woman.

We should be nice and emphathic and feel deep sympathy for someone so completely cut off from centuries of biological discoveries and understanding. Don't worry Grant, we have arranged for a Physic to visit and let some of your overheated blood. He may employ mercury as an emmetic. I am sure these treatments will act in sympathy with your worldview and exert a curative effect.
