  • Busytown: A turn-up for the books,

Hang on though, who's the victim of Ihimaera's crimes?

The authors of the books quoted? Have they sued for copyright infringement? Or is a quote (especially of reported historical dialogue) fair use, even if unattributed?

The readers and purchasers? Does the fact it isn't Witi's work make the book less enjoyable?

The greater NZ public? For thinking he's smarter than he really is?

  • Speaker: ACTA: Don't sell us down the river,

    we are talking about PIRACY

No, "piracy" is the violent robbery of ships at sea, as practiced by various Somalis. You are discussing copyright infringement.

The problem the content creation industry has is that they have a business model based on financing the creation of very expensive works through mass reproduction of those works. This worked while such reproduction was difficult and unauthorised copies were hard to find or of poor quality.

Technology has changed, and that business model doesn't work.

So now, what (some) content owners are demanding is that governments defend their business model, by, inter alia: spying on people, reversing burdens of proof, banning computer software, etc.

Why are those content makers entitled to have govenment attack their citizens liberty in this way?

  • Busytown: A turn-up for the books,

I'm wondering whether the copies with the unacknowledged intertextuality will be valuable collectors items in a few years?

  • Hard News: Truth to Power, etc,

'people who are more inclined to sue if they are the subject of adverse publication'.
I've never seen that sort of thing given to journalists before. Not even in my days on provincial newspapers.

I've heard of them and I'm not a journo. Elton John, Mohammed Fayed, that sort of person. ISTR reading that the computers at one London newspaper were set up to automatically forward any proposed article mentioning such names to the lawyers.

disbarment proceedings, or charges of facilitating tax evasion or fraud on behalf of one of her clients

Not sure they have those in Hong Kong, unless you forget to make the regular payments to General X?

  • Speaker: ACTA: Don't sell us down the river,

I doubt s92A had anything at all to do with the demise of the last government. I'd be surprised if most Labour MPs had even heard of s92A before it became a hot issue earlier this year

    Correct.

Copyright is hugely important to the "geek community" who form maybe 1% of the electorate, but exist in an echo chamber that amplifies their views. For everyone else, it's a side issue.

  • Busytown: Less is more,

The REM track "Hope" is an unconscious rework of Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" (and they give him a writing credit).

The Flaming Lips track "Fight Test" contains elements (shall we say) from Cat Stevens "Father and Son", again unconsciously (Cat sued).

I spotted both of those almost immediately, despite having no real musical skills - I wonder how the producer and band didn't, but I guess its the effect of repetition.

  • Random Play: All Apologies,

I find the the release of the recording of Gordon Brown's phone conversation an appalling breach of trust.

A communication is only confidential if *both* sides agree it is.

  • Random Play: All Apologies,

Gordon Brown's remorse in relation to the death of a British soldier...seemed genuine

But he hasn't stopped the offending activity. He's still sending troops off to a colonial occupation of someone else's country. Until he realised that and brings them home, what's remorse and apology.

  • Hard News: Celebrity Gibberish,

    FFS!

In the six years I've lived here I've maybe got four parking tickets. (Ok, I'm asking for it and will now get towed...)

If you don't want to pay fines, park where it's legal, don't drive in bus lanes, register your car, etc. It isn't a human right to plant your car where you want and how you want. If you can't afford to drive a car legally, then sell it and move somewhere with public transport.
