  • Hard News: It is your right and duty to vote,

Can I just point out that Berlusconi wasn't in fact punched in the face? Somebody threw a miniature replica of the Duomo di Milano at his mouth, which is just tremendously symbolic and I love it. Here's the video.

Still, one(1) persistent troll after three years, that's not too bad.

Word. And we can live with it.

That's what I really don't understand. He had the power to exclude him instead.

Not really. Russell can cancel one of lil p's accounts, but then lil p can create another one. Why did you think we referred to him with so many different names!? Ultimately he needs to understand that nobody is remotely impressed with what he has to say and how he says it, and in the meantime his comments will get deleted when the moderators get around to it and hopefully he won't get too much rope from the other good-faith participants.

Are we on the same page now? Can we please for the love of all that his holy move on?

    Are you vengeful at all?

No. At this point I am incredibly bored however. Any chance we could move on?

But Giovanni, is it really necessary to mention that and to show me that I am an outsider in your community?

I normally wouldn't, but if the first thing you do here is to tell everybody how they should behave then yes, I'm probably going to remind you. If you perceive that as a threat, frankly it's entirely your problem.

Is it really necessary to respond on the same level as the offender?

Oh for crying out loud Ben. You're new here, you don't know the back story to lil p and conseismal and just how offensive and obnoxious he has been for weeks now. Do you really think we ought to value your opinion on this particular issue, and model our reaction to a member of the community who clearly has no regard for anybody here on how you think that the forum should operate? I rather think not.

I see it as an extension of the culture I first encountered on Usenet in mid-90s, and I suspect I'm not the only one for whom that's the case. Would I be right there? Are many of our regulars also Usenet veterans?

Guilty as charged. And I must say that even in those heady days the most ritually toxic event for a group wasn't trolling as such, but the influx of newbies who had a problem with the tenor of the general conversation. And it was always the same sort of complaint: you guys are too left wing/right wing/elitist/mean to newbies/you don't talk about this topic enough/you talk about this topic too much. As if it could be reasonably expected for a forum - any forum - to be a channel of pure communication, without idiosincracies and cliques and personalities and mannerisms. That's simply not how social groups work. And conversely any group should be critically aware of its inner workings, but it can't become the sole subject of conversation every other day. That's what made Usenet untenable in the end for me.
