Is it irreponsible to speculate? It would be irresponsible not to speculate.

  • Hard News: Where nature may win,

It's stating the obvious at this point, but opinions as to whether Sup. Knowles managed this event as well as he could, or whether Pike Co. took all necessary precautions before the accident, aren't going to be decided by independent enquiries after the fact. They're going to be found guilty or innocent in the court of public opinion as directed by the local news media, and the weight of that public opinion is what will determine what actions are taken by the government or other interested parties.

I'd like to believe that these things could be decided by independent expert reviews based on a rational analysis of the facts, but that's just not how our culture operates once something becomes a lead story for days at a time.

  • Hard News: Where nature may win, in reply to Tom Semmens,

We have a situation where the police are running the operation, but then it appears they are not running anything to do with the actual rescue, even though they front foot the press conferences…

Well yes, that’s why you fly experts in, instead of getting one person to do everything like you would in, say, some bizarre macho fantasy. The police are managing the coordination and communication, but they are delegating specific tasks to others who have the experience to accomplish what is required. Or would you rather that P.C. Plod from Timaru be set up with a couple of tin cans and a radio controlled car and be told to “do your best, mate!”

And don’t get me started on the horrors involved in getting engineers to coordinate or communicate anything.

Reminds me of that bit in Immortality by Milan Kundera where Bernard Bertrand decides he’s going to be a journalist because the death tally of a tragedy is reported as “15 men, 3 women and 2 journalists.”

I think it's more along the lines of the Billy Adams School of Journimalism.

That is-the more adjectives you can insert into a story, the better it is.

The cynic in me says to expect a raft of stories like this one being released in the next few days under the cover of this All-Pike-River-All-The-Time madness.

  • Hard News: Healing the family feud,

It's hard to imagine Bruce Spence changing ages, really. I forgot he was in the third Matrix film until I saw it again the other day.

  • Hard News: Healing the family feud,

Since it's Friday, and the theme seems to be awesome performances, I think it's time to reflect on the quality of Philippines Got Talent:

Canada also does horror films remarkably well, as long as you don't mind thinking and stuff. Ginger Snaps and Pontypool are both worth checking out (for vastly different reasons.)

Oh typical. You point this out to me after the edit button vanishes! Let's all just pretend it never happened.
