I want to be a member of Victoria University, why should I be forced to be a member of the Victoria University of Wellington Students' Association?
I want to get a bus to Karori. Why should I be forced to subsidise Graham Souter's homophobia?

I've been busted for speeding a few times. But I've never had a criminal conviction for it. I would certainly oppose a law that made light speeding a criminal offense, whether or not it gave the cops discretion to decide whether they like me enough not to bust me.
Motoring offences *are* criminal offences, like all others. They can be dealt with through a fixed penalty (as is usual for speeding) or through the courts. You could be prosecuted for driving at 101kph in a 100 limit, for instance.
Such offences, particularly when dealt with as infringements, are not regarded by various authorities as a character issue for immigration and employment. That's their decision, and they are still offences.

Smacking may be used for the purpose of correction
If that goes through I know 2 million NZ voters that need a bit of correcting. Will baseball bats be allowed?

It was no where near a majority of students.
If you didn't vote, then you indicated a desire to go along with the majority views of those that did.

When I travel on Stagecoach, Wellington's monopoly bus provider, I don't have a choice about some of the fare going to fund Brian Souter's] homophobic and bigoted political campaigns. When I deal with public organisations like Vodafone or ANZ, I'm forced to help fund the Business Roundtable. If I want to get daily news in paper form, I need to buy a NACT pamphlet.
Having a student association as part of the "package" of higher education offered by some universities is no different to this. Students have the choice of attending an institution that doesn't include such membership in the package (unlike Wellington bus users, for instance).
Of course, the agenda behind this is obvious. Right-wing bodies, like the BRT and the newspaper ogligopoly, are fine to extract a compulsory toll from every consumer while any genuinely democratic body that tries to campaign for its members gets suppressed.

There must be something special about this electorate?
Yes. We have brains.
I actually feel that only the electors of Wellington Central should be allowed to vote on anything. Other parts of NZ should be ruled on a colonial basis, with limited autonomy to decide on garbage collection and parking rules.

Regarding the referendum, firstly, it was a loaded and misleading question.
Secondly, 90% of 54% is 48%, which is not a majority.
Thirdly, it's sad that 48% of NZers are predicate child abusers. I think on that basis, it's ok to pick out random mainstream looking people, ask them how they voted and give them a bloody good kicking if they answered Yes.

Within about a year of leaving varsity (and by the way, when the hell did we start calling it "uni"?)
In the UK it was 1923. I guess NZ had to follow suit at some stage. "Varsity" is one of those archaisms that make me giggle, I always feel it should be prepended by "dear old". Also, that those using it wear a scarf and a sweatshirt with a crest to every lecture.
