  • Hard News: Party on, dudes, in reply to Che Tibby,

i spent freaking months suggesting people hire you after our coffee

Thanks. You should have seen me on a good day ;) I received a job offer from a PAS member a couple of years ago, which I didn't take as I thought it wasn't on my career path... whatever that is! I still don't know if that was the right decision, but I'm extremely grateful all the same.

    This is a social web.

How excellent is SJD? That's good equipment-testing music there.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Back There Alone,

I'm always a few hours behind on these threads, and they pop up when I'm on a limited work connection (and like most days I don't have much specific to say or wondrous things to share today). I do have a question though: what do others use to test and try out musical equipment?

For various reasons I've had to buy several pairs of relatively inexpensive headphones in the last year, and some are better than others. I'm holding out for a better pair when I get to an electronics capital. So, I put on something with range, vocals, hundreds or thousands of listens, and which I love greatly...

(Video, because there's always someone who hasn't been endtroduced.)

    Guys, seriously, I know nothing.

    Knowledge need not be known.

  • Up Front: Or It's Who We're Drinking With...,

Thanks for the post, Emma, and for once again reminding people that being bisexual is valid and real and sometimes you end up quite excluded. I never would've gone to something that said "lesbian" at their age, because I knew I would be told I wasn't gay enough, or was hiding, or was just doing it to be 'cool'

Truth. This worthwhile research, but we know that these are just the bisexuals who are willing to self-identify. The need for many gay and lesbian people to shore up their own identities by excluding those who form attraction towards more than one sex means there will be plenty whose [public/private/other] identity is gay/lesbian or straight, and use alcohol in much the same way. Because we've replaced a monochrome with a binary we've successfully excluded anyone who falls outside those categories.

there was a time when public address was my no.1 tether to a much-missed turangawaewae. that's something you don't forget.

Last year was the only one in the last 6 in which I spent more than 4 weeks in Aotearoa, and during those six years I've felt closer to home whenever I've been here. I feel slightly foreign sometimes, but this always makes sense.

It's also been a pleasure slowly meeting many of you. I had to wait until 2011 for many brief encounters, and there are others I'd love to meet properly for a first time. Every one of you has been good people. Thanks.

  • Hard News: The Big 2012 US Election PAS Thread,

Brad Luen has put together an open script for aggregating NZ's polling data, weighted to actual election results and DimPosted. It's an excellent effort. Unfortunately we lack the fine polling that the US has, which would be equivalent to polling at the electorate level. Does anyone know if this has been done by parties in NZ?

Monte Carlo methods. With neat graphics. Actually running these is slightly beyond my abilities, but I like the concepts.

And suddenly, they're discussing a carbon tax, with evident seriousness. Light returns to the valley.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Hyper than the rest,

Many things will never be available in this territory.

Thankfully we still have Soundcloud. Here's the biggest, warmest, grandest, hands-in-the-air-and-head-in-the-clouds Daft Punk remix I've ever heard. Superheroes - Solidisco remix (with download).

The Noise circles my camp - teeth bared, haunches raised. I toss the final Gallup poll onto the fire. Dawn approaches.

I'm well behind on this one, but parody account FiveThirtyNate is killing it handsomely.
