  • Island Life: The Guilt of Clayton Weatherston,

I believe that was the mother on checkpoint saying that while she didn't like the lines of the defence she recognise the team were just doing their job.

If you have a problem with what conduct people can get away with take it up with the system.

... and to be clear, that's 'seeing-things' kind of something-happening-that-isn't, rather than 'matters-of-interpretation'.

Yeah, but, surely he was in a psychotic state when he acted? He was psychotic, deranged - I don't know what else it could be called?

Psychotic is when you think something is happening that isn't. If he thought she was actually literally Satan, that would be psychosis.

He was an angry, angry jerk, who appears to have been trying to obliterate her.

Provocation defense, might be used by a victim of ongoing domestic abuse, that retaliation.

Or they could use some other defence that might actually help.

If a killer is provoked to kill they need to be granted the provocation defence.

Take account of it in the sentencing. I don't know of a provocation, that I would consider acceptable excuse for deliberately killing someone, that couldn't be argued under another defence. Mostly I defere to the law commission.

Stewart - you'd be right about the weirdness of the worldview but an important point about the inflated self-esteem is that it'd be extremely fragile: what other people think would be hugely important, hence the going of the deep end if they don't play ball.

Personality disorders do tend to perpetuate the situations they're set up to avoid.

As I haven't quite brought myself to say on Kiwiblog; glad for the verdict, but that doesn't mean we should give him some extra sentence specifically for being a complete jerk.

And yet, I believe in the wider economy one of the few feasible ways of measuring productivity is by seeing how much people are paid.

  • Hard News: Chocolate elitism,

I think it is time there were some controls put on what can and can't be called Chocolate

I recall that under the current rules, if Cadbury's put 1+ per cent less cocoa mass in their dairy milk, it would not be chocolate.

It is important to the look and mouth-feel of the chocolate, not to the flavour.

"Texture influences how flavour is perceived." says the lady quoted in the article about how the Press newsroom preferred the new Cadbury's.

    Tempering tantrum anyone?

I have to admit the John Cambell slot on the whitakers had me trying a sante (I think their plan for the recession is to laud a random kiwi business every night). It did help clarify something that must have been lurking in the back of my mind - it's actually bad milk chocolate I don't like.

    Speaking of which

I have seen complaints about the use of the phrase "child sex abuse images" to cover images where the abuse is considered no more than the taking of the photograph. Also of images of adults who are understood to be depicting juveniles. And various kinds of artificial image.

Not that these are good things, I just like to know exactly what we're talking about.
