  • Busytown: A good read,

Giovanni: I am "clear" on the standard definition of plagiarism.

You asked whether in order for it to be plagiarism the source had to be unacknowledged - that's what I was referring to.

Danielle: I'd have to watch Rushmore again -- and Full Metal Jacket again -- to see how close those shots are. But we could full up a thread as long as Copyright Must Change -- heaven forbid -- with examples of words, shots and themes in films that are strongly reminiscent of words, shots and themes in other, earlier films

The nature of a cinematic quotation and periphrasis is simply not the same as a ilterary one. Earlier today I put to you the first example that came to mind - De Palma referring to the puschair scene in Battleship Potemkin during a shootout in The Untouchables. But this is the equivalent of a literary allusion, not of a direct quotation, of the lifting verbatim of a whole sentence - that would be De Palma splicing in the film the sequence from Potemkin (and when that happens, you most certainly have to state it), or working off the same script for a significant enough length of time.

My personal feeling is that literary fiction is really just as intertextual as film, and the ideas of authorship and plagiarism aren't all that different. You still can't purloin a story (in the technical sense of the word) or lift frames or chunks of dialogue without attribution and (if copyright still applies) permission. And while you and David Cauchi make interesting points for a broader reflection on what constitutes authorship and plagiarism, I think they are poor analogies for Ihimaera's 'oversights'.

    Or the New Zealand squad.

  • Hard News: Standing up and calling bullshit,

And since I haven't got into trouble yet for voicing my opinions I may be forced to conclude that the publishers of the Herald are more tolerant of debate than some contributors to this discussion.

Interesting failure to account for the content of said opinion and to, you know, debate the contrary views. I think you'll also find that the "contributors" you are talking about total one person, and that many rose to your defence on your particular count.

Oh, they seem able to tolerate Gareth George all right, while the other bastion of New Zealand journalism is equally happy to host the debate-busting views of Michael Laws, so I wouldn't get overly excited - racism and bigotry appear to be hardly disqualifying.

  • Speaker: ACTA: Don't sell us down the river,

I suspect Harawira is being pushed out of his party because they are a bunch of brown tories who are concerned with the corporate interests of the iwi, while he has support among Maori without money.

Not sure if I'd express it quite so crudely, but I do wonder if it's the message that is being sent. I thought the "we can't control him" comments of the last few days have been quite telling too.

  • Speaker: ACTA: Don't sell us down the river,

The short version is that any industry that tries to survive by fighting its consumers is doing something wrong. Adapt or die, it's that simple. If you can't adapt, die and let something else take your place. Who laments the demise of the village blacksmith or the local saddler as a consequence of the arrival of the automobile? Were we to transplant current attitudes to change the early 1900s, we'd be stuck with horses and carts courtesy of legislative fiat.

Whenever I hear this argument formulated in this particular way, I swear to God I fel like donating money to Sony.

    There was a rugby game?

At least eighty thousand of my compatriots seemed to think so.

Do these All Blacks have to steal their limelight?

They might rather want to reflect on ten consecutive minutes of repeated professional fouls they committed in front of their try line at the end of the game, and how the hell did they get away with not conceding a penalty try. That was bizarre.

  • Random Play: All Apologies,

How many times do I have to keep calling bullshit on that? Sorry, but anyone who thinks Hide has someone dropped off the radar over the last week either needs to open both their eyes or just stop lying.

Anybody who thinks that Hide's short or long term viability as a politician has been in any way damaged by his recent escapades is seriously deluded. He behaved like a corporate executive, which is exactly what he and his (few) supporters thinks a politician is, a view shared by many in National and quite possibly our PM. If National throws him Epsom next time too, he'll be in Parliament again with the customary handful of ACT colleagues. None of this makes any material difference to his standing.

Harawira, on the other hand, is done.
