The Gnome Party has a certain ring to it.
I dunno, we already had the Rogergnomes and look where that got us...

John Key has been swift to issue an assurance that he does not share his minister's philosophy on "core services" for local government, and that Hide's Cabinet permission to use Internal Affairs resources for his review is but an "engagement in debate".
Perhaps he and his cabinet shouldn't have signed off on the paper's recommendations if this is truly the case.
Went to a meeting of the Grey Lynn 2030 group last night at which Lisa Prager and Phil Twyford spoke about the Auckland legislation. If it's enacted as proposed, it really would result in a shocking reduction of local democracy, and leave Council assets wide open to privatisation.
There's also an insultingly short time available to submit on the second of the three pieces of Auckland Governance legislation - submissions close on 26 June.

Wrong part of town for me sadly, but Grey Lynn seems to be quite the hotbed of sustainability, with the GLFM and also the very active Grey Lynn 2030 group, who are part of the international Transition Towns initiative (and on Twitter here).
Lets hope some sustainability seeps into the Supercity concept too...

Just now TV3's Campbell Live claims they ran almost exactly the same story about the same Levin farm owned by Colin Kaye in 2006. They have the pig farmer on tape saying he'd sort the farm out back then...

Interesting website... except that it thinks Kiwi only refers to fruit.
It does a lot better with Apteryx
The online media and discussions about Wolfram Alpha remind me a lot of my first experience with an internet search engine c. 1996. A guy whose name I don't recall raved about how amazing Webcrawler was, but it didn't come up with anything useful about any of the terms I suggested searching - I was completely underwhelmed.
Jump forward a few years and the internet and Google are nearly essential parts of daily life. Will be fascinating to see what future iterations of WA might capable of in about a decade...

@Tom and the others who nearly support the Greens, but can't quite bring themselves to do it. What's with the "throw the baby out with the bath water" thing going on here? I really don't get it.
I regularly hear from friends who are ecologists or might broadly be termed environmentalists, but when it comes to the crunch would rather support one of the main parties who (one of which in particular) seem allergic to promoting (and funding) any policies that will seriously give NZ a chance of maintaining it's natural environment, or promoting international sustainability.
I don't want to pick on you Tom, but the broccoli comment is kind of typical of the response - it's like people have some childhood resistance to being "told what to do."
My view is get over it - collectively we have some life-threateningly serious environmental issues to deal with right now - get stuck in and don't let the trivial stuff get in the way. If you're so close to supporting them, tell the Greens what they need to change to get you over the line.

It's not the chemical resistance that's evil
Unless you're interested in protecting indigenous biodiversity (e.g. native plants, animals, habitats and ecosystems) from invasive plants (weeds) - in NZ we have enough trouble with exotic species without artificial resistance to the herbicides that might be capable of controlling them.

don't forget your towel ....
They don't excite me that much.
At the risk of showing my age, it's a reference to The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy (1981!).
Hope the Waterview M'Way isn't quite that destructive! Think what else we could achieve with a billion or two dollars if we didn't build it at all...

3) Not much to start from unfortunately - none of the World’s 15 Most Bike Friendly Cities seem to be in NZ...
