  • Hard News: "Creative" and "Flexible",

Sacha: <I'd be happy to see money redirected to support music about and of this place, not by long-dead white Europeans whose local audience are amongst our most wealthy - and the most accustomed to subsidy it seems.>

Someone may have already taken you to task about this comment, I haven't yet read all posts -- but I think you are wrong to assume that a love of classical music resides mainly among the wealthy. I know people of all walks of life who love it and play it regularly. In fact it's been my experience on occasional (but rare) visits to the homes of the wealthy that their taste can often be described as crass and what items are of interest have often been the choice of an interior decorator.

  • Hard News: Be the party of good science,

<(By the way: I have a little trouble with the Green Party signing up to the unproven claim that dioxin exposure is responsible for a wave of neural tube defects in New Zealand -- but campaigning against the addition to bread of a naturally-occurring vitamin that would prevent dozens of cases of spina bifida every year. But that's Sue Kedgley for you.)>
I was under the impression that Kedgley agreed that folated bread be made available for those who needed it but not for wholesale addition?

  • Hard News: Smack to the Future,

Now that it appears there is going to be no change in the legislation I suggest we send the bill for this entire farce of a referendum to it's instigator, Larry Ballsup.

  • Hard News: On Ideas,

<And I personally wouldn't want to be in a government that took on the Mother and apple pie sector that is nursing.>

I don't think they care that much if Joe and Mrs Soap can't get a hospital bed when desperately needed. They themselves of course just go private. Isn't the general idea to wear down public medicine until it too is privatised? Let's face it, public hospitals have, even after nine years of Labour, never recovered from the savaging of the Richardson/Shipley years.

  • Hard News: Not Helping,

One only has to look at the National line-up to see that they are totally bereft of vision. They simply have no answers to the current problems. The one thing that they eagerly latched onto from their futile Talk Fest was depriving the workers of 10% of their pay -- a typically Tory response -- let the workers carry the burden while the bosses receive the subsidy.

Ralston should stick to writing about his technical incompetence and his boozy social life, as he does ad infinitum in his Listener column.

  • Hard News: Birth of the Nasty,

I heard Locky was seen cavorting round his bedroom in that wig and pink tights last night. I think the 'ceremonial' occasions may be out of sight of the public from now on -:)

Mind you, being lobbied by Meurant wouldn't be your average civilised tete-a-tete over tea and scones.
"Oh, hi Ross, come in. Is that a baton in your pocket or hasn't last night's viagra worn off yet?"

  • Hard News: Through the Looking Glass,

Consumer NZ claim that the average return from the Super managed funds has been around 3.6% (not forgetting the recent $700 million loss).
Maybe investment in, say, broadband throughout the country may indirectly achieve a better return?
