  • Hard News: Phew, what a scorcher?,

We now know which theory has been supported by modelling and, increasingly, real-world data.

Yes, but that is hardly saying much. And you are missing the point. Dutton et al. are talking about the gloom and doom merchants (eg, Al Gore), who of course wouldn't have a vested interest in promoting their theories. You know, the sort of people who thought the end was nigh with Y2K and Sars and Bird-Flu, etc. Sure, these things were problems but they were not, and have not (yet!), been nearly as serious as some predicted. In the face of these consistently wrong predictions, wouldn't it be prudent to examine any impending end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it theories with a little skepticism?

I'm not quite sure why you feel the need to malign Denis Dutton. He's pointed out, although I'm sure you're aware, that back in the mid '70s the world was apparently suffering a climatic cooling trend that was going to have devastating effects for the rest of the century. There was possibly going to be a new Ice Age. It's just as well a few skeptics didn't jump on the bandwagon.

I still can't get Al Gore's claim of Ground Zero covered by water out of my mind. All exaggerations are equal but some are more equal than others, it would seem.

  • Hard News: Taking the rise,

    These people really are crazy.

By "these people", I'm assuming you're referring to people with whom you disagree. Nice. Although I might disagree with you, I'd never suggest you deserve to be put in a straitjacket.

  • Hard News: Claims,

Maybe whoever did it (assuming it wasn't David - Robin, passing psychotic, disgruntled former client/pupil) didn't put a whole lot of planning into the initial decision to go and kill them and forgot that one person would be out? Are most mass-murder rampages carefully planned?

Do you really believe that? That some stranger walked into the house, conveniently while David was on his paper run, knew where to find the gun and ammunition and some opera gloves, committed mass murder, did some of Robin's washing, and then logged onto a computer to say that David deserved to stay? No, the killer is either David or Robin. Not even the Joe Karam or Bain's lawyer has suggested that somebody else is the killer.

  • Hard News: Claims,

I'm glad David got bail. I also think he should be retried so that his guilt or innocence can finally be proved (since all the new evidence the defence couldn't present at earlier trials finally can). I know this is expensive but if David is innocent he should be compensated but I don't think he should be until proven innocent

You mean like the Shipton, Schollum and Rickards were proved innocent? A not guilty verdict is not innocence, as much as some of us would like it to be. I tend to agree that he should be retried, but I can see some pitfalls. A hung jury is a distinct possibility. Some witnesses may have died or may not want to testify. So the complaint of a fair trial may still hold with a new trial.

  • Hard News: Claims,

Why kill the whole family but spare David? What did he do to deserve leniency?

I think you've nailed it there, NI. It's funny how some people are saying that Robin was deranged. Right, so he was so deranged that he thought that David was the only one who "deserved to stay" (why not deserved to live?) and logged on to a computer when he could've written a note the night before. That's not including washing his clothes while David was on his paper run. As others have said, why did Robin - apparently wanting David to stay/live - leave behind evidence implicating David but not himself? One handwritten note and David would've been in the clear.

  • Hard News: Claims,

Slightly OT, but anyone belittling the effect of D Bain's sentence needs to look no further than to watch him on the News tonight. A totally different person.

Yeah, you're right; his clothes weren't covered in blood and those bruises on his forehead had healed.

  • Hard News: Claims,

He doesn't know if his father killed them because he didn't see it either. The only way David would know who the killer was was if he was the killer, or saw the killer.

You're missing one simple point. Either David or Robin is the killer. Therefore, if David knows he isn't the killer, he must know that Robin is, or vice-versa.

  • Hard News: Claims,

Wasn't Broad the cop on the Ellis case who gave the Holmes show interview about how the problems of society were that we were ignoring the teachings of "good men" like Graham Capill?

No, it was Brian Pearce who made that comment. Howard Broad merely charged four female Christchurch Civic creche workers with heinous crimes of sexual abuse, charges which effectively ended their chosen careers. Broad has never publicly apologised.
