  • Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe on…,

If you haven't already come across it, Brass Eye is also worth a look for some good satire:

  • Hard News: The standing-still sweep,

As an etymological aside I notice some people using the word 'hippie' as a derogatory term. Could someone please explain why this is so? I don't understand.

I'm going to go with Cartman from South Park as my source on this - perhaps its a generational thing?

  • Hard News: One Million Tunes,

That's weird. When my family brought its first stereo with a CD player (1988 I think), the salesperson left Brothers in Arms on CD in the CD player accidentally, and we kept it.

Maybe it's the only way they could offload that CD?

    From Wikipedia:
Brothers in Arms was one of the first albums to be directed at the CD market, being the first full digital recording. It was also released on vinyl and cassette. This was also the first album to sell one million copies in the CD format and to outsell its LP version. Indeed, when the disc was released, it was said that more people owned a copy of the CD than owned CD players.

  • Speaker: This ain't a scene,

Incidentally, do you think this is what emos' put in their hair?

  • Speaker: This ain't a scene,

    Meh, emos aren't that bad.

When you look at the 'emo' music, it all just seems to be a response to the silly, slutty pop crap music that littered the early noughties. Frankly, any fashion that leads to longer tshirts as a response to muffin-causing hipster styles is a good thing.

Seriously - better My Chemical Romance than Paris Hilton's second album.

Damn teenagers, with you're music and everything...

  • Stories: Injuries,

NI: ouch for you. At least now you've got interesting hands?

Me, I've been lucky to avoid breaking any limbs - although I apparently had a curious fascination with drinking gargle and eating my grandmother's sleeping tablets when about 3...

Worst accident in the close family was a cuz from the 'rapa. Despite being warned repeatedly to stay off the three-wheeler motorbike, she decided at age 13 to take the two next door neighbour kids out for a blat. Well, fortunately the two neighbours got thrown off, but cuz was not so lucky. A few flips later and she ended up with the bike on her head and her nose hanging on by a thread. She's ok now and you can't really tell, but she does still have this big scar across her forehead as a reminder.

It's not a bad thing that trikes aren't as common as they used to be...

  • Hard News: On receipt of a not-so-nastygram,

Would it really hurt to have otago.ac.nz point to a webpage?

<cough> Have you tried looking at publicaddress.co.nz or publicaddress.net.nz? Surely I'm not the only one to screw this up :-)

I suspect youtube has a policy of removing anything that anyone complains about automatically, so long as it looks like it's official.

    It would appear so: http://www.stuff.co.nz/4027172a28.html

  • Hard News: Art and the Big Guy,

there was, and still is, a move afoot in the US to license secondhand CD retailers, exactly because of the issue raised by Craig. Various country acts some years sued a second hand chain for depriving them of royalty income..with little success to date, but I don't think the concept has gone away.

Which is where Microsoft does very well with its licenses - you don't buy a copy of the product, per se, but a license to use that product. Hmm, wouldn't it be nice to have something like that for music... you have the right to access this song ... in whatever format.
