  • Hard News: Contains strong language,

Compulsion to fill in a census seems to me like a marker on the road to compulsion to carry identity papers etc.

Well, it's a heckuva long road, they've been compulsory in Britain for the last 160 plus years and even longer in the US.

  • Southerly: Late for What?,

a short, snappy and easily agreed upon gender-neutral title that will piss off neither males nor females.

    The Honorable? Hon for short.

  • Hard News: Contains strong language,

could you please tell me what the frig anyone's religion - or lack thereof - has to do with public policy? Serious question

Another possibility is using it to predict things like requirements for STD clinics and young parent help - given that many Evangelical Christians are less likely to use birth control, especially when first having sex, there may be a correlation between number of Evangelicals and the number of young parents.

    CONGRATULATIONS!!

Start saving in a sleep bank now, you've got an eternity (well, that's how it seems) of broken nights ahead of you.

Re: the names. I love it when fundamentalist Christians name their kids out of the Bible, without too much reference to what the original actually did. So in that spirit, I recommend Keturah (a concubine), Rahab (a prostitute) or Kerrenhappuch (just because she'll never have another in her class).

I do rather like Hayden/Hadyn, so then you could have Hay Hay Haywood.

  • Island Life: RIP Doddery,

    No!

"...when the time cometh, and he is called, the heavenly gates may need oiling and the divine pot holes filling and he shall have a golden tar pot and sit at the CEO`s right hand."

Someone needs to talk to Him/Her/Themselves Upstairs about their selection policy, because it sucks.

  • Top Gear and reality TV,

Errummm. Top Gear makes up about 50% of my viewing so I'm not a dis-interested commentator.

Clarkson does know know about cars and he is a reasonable driver, so it's not arguing from ignorance (which some film/TV criticism is).

He can be vitriolic - but vitriol is often funny (see Hitchens, C. for more of the same). And he's not dull.

As for Survivor, that'd be much more interesting if they just left them (filming of course) until all but one died. I'd watch that.

  • Hard News: No end of mileage,

I've been really stunned at the total absence of actual young people from any of the media coverage of these Big Wig Pow Wows in the last week. If we don't find out from young people what they think might work then we are just going to end up coming up with unworkable plans. Change needs to involve those who we are seeking the change for - something that happens with them not to them. Surely?

But they don't want change. They're pretty sure death/permanent injury won't happen to them (and mostly they're lucky enough to be right) and they don't care what others outside their group think. Well, no, maybe they do, they like pissing old farts like me off with donuts at 2 am. So why should they join in, they don't have much to add beyond "go away and leave us alone".

  • Hard News: No end of mileage,

I have some sympathy for Celia Lashlie's "parents need to learn to say no" position - if parents required from their teenagers a bit more information, and set some clear guidelines

Yes, that's fair enough when we're talking about the 16 year-olds killed at the Ccch party. But how many boy racers are 16? And how does a parent tell a 19 year-old with a job and income that he's not going to buy a V8 or drive it at 2 am?
