  • Up Front: It's Not Sex, and It's Not Education, in reply to 3410,

Yeah, it's a hard line, but I'm not sure Ben realised just how strong an influence it can be to have a guy insist that he can't wear a condom/doesn't want to when you're horny, eager to please & slightly self-conscious. I made some pretty crap decisions there, but why was I put in the position to be that gatekeeper in the first place?

Like I said, my own inexperience, fear of confrontation & libido had a part to play there too.

Guys like you are the reason I got an STI & have used the morning after pill 3 times. In combo with the frankly lackluster sex ed I received, which in no way equipped me to insist on condom use when faced with someone who wasn't keen.

Thankfully, I'm no longer an inexperienced 19 year old who is so scared of rejection & confrontation that I acquiesce at the first hint of "but I don't wanna" whining.

I think the most useful sexual education experience for me was finding my parents' copy of The Joy of Sex when I was 8. It didn't tell me anything about contraception or STI prevention, but it did plant the seed that there were other things to do than PIV penetration.

    Christchurch-That-Was

    I like it.

@Jolisa, that second picture is doing my head in too. Cashel Mall, now a gravel parking lot. And after all that recent work to do it up.

For me, the thing about the Dux was the different people it attracted. I could pop in there on a Friday or Saturday evening & be pretty much guaranteed that there would be 2-3 groups of friends & acquaintances there. There'd be workmates & social groups & families, and even the most vehement meat-eaters would be tucking into vege nachos & pizza, washed down with pitchers of good beer.

Saying goodbye to the main block at AGHS was pretty heart-wrenching. To know that the iconic image of the school is going to be pulled down & replaced with prefabs for the forseeable future, it just brought home so many memories.

I have a friend who appears to 'dry up' when baby is about 7-8 months old - happened with her son & now her daughter. She knows that switching to/supplementing with formula is what's needed, but feels so guilty & horrible because all the blogs & Plunket advice is telling her that she needs to breastfeed until bubs is X years old & Mum can't give up yet. It's heartbreaking to watch her struggle between what she knows the kid needs & the pressure she's getting from the professionals & busybodies.

I didn't have such a visceral reaction to it, but I did just kind of write it off. N&S seems to be tending towards sensationalist headlines/covers, like the one with a firefighter holding a baby & lamenting the lack of manly men. I'd like to read an intelligent, well-put together magazine, and those covers edge my impression of it into Women's Day world.

Funny, the Snow Sports Club (CUSSC) and Boardriders' Assn (CUBA) never got anything, and they've both had a decent web presence for a while. Though Canterbury University in England probably doesn't have skiing & snowboarding clubs with competing acronyms :)

Before he shows up ranting, don't let Gregor Ronald start on how the current crop of young journos can't read a map. Lost trampers & mountain climbers constantly being reported as on a particular mountain when they're a couple of hundred km away...

Hey, I used to walk past that house every day to get to AGHS! I've been sneakily wondering if I'd recognise your place when I realised what part of town you were in.

I love how snow turns everything kind of wonderful - leafless trees get new adornment, a small slope becomes a sledding hill.
