  • Hard News: Poor Choices,

Without meaning to offend, those people who dismiss twitter as a useless toy for children are doing it wrong.

I don't use twitter and in fact am a hopeless facebooker. But I have been bullied (in the old school manner).
I guess if media such as twitter work for you then great; but if you find your blood pressure rising or your sleep/ ability to function affected in a negative way then ... don't go back. One could argue that may be harder if you are a "celebrity" but I think that's more to do with the need you may have to be wanted/liked. And that sort of behaviour can be played out anywhere by any of us.
Is it kind of a form of self-harm to keep going back to a place your can easily(?) avoid that makes you feel lousy? That doesn't make online bullying ok in anyway, but we have some responsibility to understand what it good for us and what isn't.
Of course I can't really claim any moral high ground by not using social media - it's likley I miss out on a lot. But then again I still get to shout abuse at the 6 o'clock news in the privacy of my own home. My family snort at me in derision - but I'm ok with that ...

  • Hard News: Moving right along?,

The thing I've found disappointing, is the glee with which people have taken to ridiculing Wewege's name. many of us have had a good titter about it haven't we? Hilary Barry even giggled over it when she was covering it for 3News.

Except we were ropeable when Paul Henry made fun of Sheila Dikshit's name ...

Actually, I snorted at Luigi Wewege's name, but then I laughed at the Sheila Dikshit incident. In fact I also wondered why Ms Chuang had a man's firstname. But then I guess I may not be grown up enough to be part of the PA crew.
Mind you I personally don't give a rat's about Len's affair. There are plenty of more morally bankrupt shenanigans afoot in this National government that we could be ‘outraged’ over.

  • Hard News: The GCSB Bill: We at least…,

I've just watched John Key's appearance on Campbell Live tonight and am frankly gobsmacked. Apparently the GCSB is just like having Norton Anti-virus installed on my PC (for free). There's no correlation between the passing of this bill and our recent warm reception in Washington, nor any linkage to the activities of NSA/ Prism and the like. In fact the GCSB only do 'legal things' and therefore everything they do is 'legal'. It's fairly difficult to unpack this cynical and kafkaesque claptrap without my head spinning round. John Key's levels of condecension for the voting public is breathtaking. He obviously think we have all been lobotomised.
I clearly need to stop thinking about this and ... I dunno, go fishing perhaps?

  • Hard News: Thatcher,

Just thinking back to my time in the UK. I was in London when we heard the news she'd resigned. I'd just started my first 'real' job for an Anglican child care charity. They were a fairly earnest lot, stopped for prayers at 11am each day (still puzzling how they managed to employ an antipodean atheist). Anyway someone listening to a radio announced "she's gone". Cheering broke out around the office. And bugger me, if we didn't down tools and open some seriously dodgy lambrusco to celebrate. Yes these people who dealt with the human cost of Thatcher's policies, the poverty, begging, homelessness and hopelessness she produced. They cheered she'd gone - like VJ day or something. It was wonderful - and I realised that these Christians might be alright afterall.

I'm a lurker - used to be bFM listener to Hard News back in the day and from overseas (what feels like a million years ago) are you sure it's only 10?
I love the breadth of debate on this site, the knowledge of the arcane and useless, the geekiness and the left-leanings of (most).
I also love the fact I know I'm not alone when I resort to shouting at the tele news or some twatcock commentator.

    It's home.
